Tyler Kennison and Family

Tyler was flown to Sioux Falls Thursday 9/14/18 night and was taken straight into an angiogram procedure to remove a clot from his basilar artery, which was successful. He has a vegetation in one of his heart valves, which is like a calcified, hard growth of bacteria. What happened is pieces of that broke up and caused a “shower” of particles that caused the clots. Open heart surgery will be required to replace or fix the valve. The cardiothoracic surgeon is not comfortable doing the surgery until Tyler is a bit more stable, because they will have to give him blood thinners to do the surgery and he is currently a very high risk for hemorrhaging. The surgery is necessary regardless because without it, this will happen again.

He has a bleed on the front of his brain, they aren’t really sure why— the doctor said his brain is currently “angry”. He is on four different antibiotics because they haven’t yet pinpointed what type of infection caused this. Because of this, infectious disease has been consulted to help with his treatment.

The MRI showed two areas of damage on his brain, so he had two strokes near his brain stem. He’s waking a little now since they took him off sedation and is currently breathing on his own with a little support. The areas of the brain effected by the stroke control things like wakefulness and breathing. The doctor indicated that Tyler has been through a lot and might not wake much for a while, as his brain needs to figure some things out. He will hopefully be taken off the ventilator tonight. He will be seen by several specialists but unsure of that will be today, this weekend, or not until Monday. The critical care ICU doctor said they are very much just watching and waiting right now.

As of Sunday 9/16/18, Tyler had some setbacks and had an external ventricular drain put in which was successful.

A few years back, Denise (his mom), suffered a massive stroke herself. The Kennison family has endured a significant amount of financial hardship over the years since her stroke.

The financial stress on the family having to stay/travel back and forth from Rapid City(home) to Sioux Falls will be a huge burden to them with losing income from work.
