Hi, my names Georgia Mather and I am a second year student studying Sport Development with Coaching at Sheffield Hallam University.

I have been given an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity, to be one of 7 students selected to complete my seven week placement out in Africa. This means starting from the beginning of May 2019, through to June I will be living and working in the City of Arusha in Tanzania.

What I will be doing in Tanzania?
My peers and I will be working with the Arusha Youth Development Organisation and YES Tanzania to build the capacity of existing community sports and youth development organisations in Tanzania to enable them to provide sustainable opportunities for young people to participate in sport. This will involve forming activities and workshops designed to empower the communities to meet the challenges of poverty and disadvantage.

I will be living with a host family during my time in Arusha; immersing myself in their own culture and lifestyle. I am hoping to implement a positive influence on those less fortunate than myself through the power of sport, but also gain a greater understanding of the role that sport plays within their communities.

Due to my background within Gymnastics and Cheerleading/Dance my placement also provides me with the chance to bring a new sport into their community, focusing on promoting sport to women and getting them more active.  Creating session plans and easy coaching techniques to follow once I have left is an amazing opportunity to leave own legacy within schools.

My Fundraising!

Cycle to Tanzania
As a team we have decided to host a static bike challenge to cycle the distance from Sheffield to Arusha. This works out at 7,000km! This will take place in Sheffield City Campus on the 1st April, along with promoting more about what we plan to for the community whilst in Arusha.

What will this money go towards?
My 7 week placement is self-funded and will cost around £2,500. I am aiming to raise as much as possible to go towards flights, living expenses, vaccinations and accommodation. However a percentage of the money raised will also be going towards gaining equipment to take over to Arusha to help the development of sport in the community.

Equipment
We are hoping to gain equipment to take out to Arusha with us and leave in schools for future use. Tanzania is a very underdeveloped country in which any Multi-skills equipment (bean bags, balls, cones, bibs) would have a massive impact for sport in the community. If anyone is part of any clubs or schools with old equipment that is no longer being used, any donations would be a massive help.

Thank you in advance for any donations, likes, comments and your support! Very grateful for this opportunity and can't wait to make the most of it.
