Turtle Tunnels- Safe Turtle Crossings
Want to join me in making a difference? We are raising funds for The Land Between's Turtle Guardians program, to build and install turtle ecopassages using recycled materials that cost less than standard solutions, and are durable too!
Steel barrels are machined and installed below grade next to roads where culverts are, to direct turtles through culverts and safely to the other side. Cut steel drums are concave and this arch shape is an engineering marvel because it is durable and can carry a snow load.
These half-pipes are also backfilled to be flush with the road surface/grade, so that ANY wildlife that gets onto the road can also get off the road too!
We have tested this project in Gooderham, Ontario in partnership with the county road department.
We have mapped and modelled areas across Cottage Country where this solution can be applied to help our shelled friends .
Over 900 sites have been identified.. We have assessed 150 in the field and have shortlisted priority and feasible areas.
We would like to transfer this model to those 12 of those identified hotspots across Cottage Country, in partnership with local road departments too.
Each site material costs are approximately $8000.00 (fencing barrels, fence tie-ins, excavators, rust paint, and monitoring cameras)
