Turn the Tide Education Fund

Donation protected
For the last five years, our families have been raising money any way we could think of to support 37 child-headed households in Malawi. Child-headed households are homes led by children. Both of their parents have died, usually to HIV/AIDS. Our friend, Michelle Jones, started a charity called Turn The Tide eight years ago when she met some of these kids and promised to help keep them in their homes and communities instead of having to be shipped off to an orphanage where they lose all of their extended family contacts and community. For eight years, with just the help of family and friends, Michelle has been providing everything these kids need to eat and go to school.

School is the absolute end-goal. Do you know only 7% of KIDS FINISH HIGH SCHOOL IN MALAWI? And yet education is the only chance these kids will have to get a decent paying job and get out of the poverty they were born into.

The very first kid Michelle ever supported, Christopher is now in his third year of university. University! That’s a pretty incredible achievement for an orphan in a poor rural village when you consider that in the whole of Malawi, ONLY 1% OF ALL KIDS GO TO UNIVERSITY. Christopher is in social work. Another girl supported by Turn The Tide, Maria, is in nursing. Two more hope to go next year. (If you are good at math you would have worked out that Michelle’s statistics for educational success are 15% higher than the government of Malawi’s!)

Here in Canada, we have done what we could. We did bake sales, Christmas markets in the freezing cold, spaghetti dinners, yard sales, and even tried a school dance (which flopped, but hey, it was worth a try.) So far, we have raised close to $40,000. Which is good. But this year we are stepping it up a notch.

Relatively speaking, it doesn’t take much:

$351 - covers the cost of food, school supplies, and school fees for each primary school kid for an entire year.

$1,431 - cover the costs of food, transport, uniforms, and shoes for high school kids for an entire year.

$3,023 - covers the cost of university fees, plus food, accommodation and bus fares for university for a year.

THERE IS NO MIDDLE MAN. Everyone who helps Turn The Tide, from the former-orphan who distributes food and pays the school fees for our kids, to the widows who check in on them every day, everyone is a volunteer. So 100% of any money you contribute will be going STRAIGHT TO THE KIDS IN MALAWI.

So our goal is to raise enough to pay for all of the food, necessities, transport, and fees allowing every one of these children to finish school

- 27 x kids in primary school: $351 per child per year

- 7 x kids in high school: $1,431 per child per year

- 3 x kids in university: $3, 023 per child per year

- 12 x widows: $345 per widow per year

Total Education: $ 32, 703
