Tulum Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic
Donation protected
Tulum, Mexico - the magical, charming Caribbean beach town full of yoga retreats, beach cocktails, influencers and IG selfie spots...and lots and lots and LOTS of street dogs and cats.
We desperately need to control the animal population here. The local government does nothing (worse than nothing, actually: the local official in charge of protecting animal welfare is a backyard breeder...).
In my 3 short years living in paradise, I've rescued a dog or cat every couple of weeks. One weekend, I brought in seven kittens, all malnourished, full of fleas and hanging on by a thread.
Dogs routinely die of distemper, a disease we barely even think about in the US because dogs and cats get vaccinated.
Litters often get wrapped in plastic bags and throw away. Alive. Or left in cardboard boxes - without their mom - in the middle of the street, in full sun.
I can go on, but I'll stop there. Suffice to say the animal situation here is really sad.
But there is hope! A local rescue organization, Alma Animal Tulum, is starting what will be the first low-cost spay and neuter clinic!!!
It will open July 1 of this crazy crazy year, and will offer low cost sterilizations for owners who can't pay more, and will also sterilize street dogs and cats that don't have a human. With a little more time and money, it will also offer vaccinations.
We will start to curb the suffering.
We have a location. We have a licensed vet with experience in a sterilization clinic, and an agreement with a nearby veterinary school to send their recent grads to do a year of service work for almost-free.
But we need money.
Rent is $400/month. The fully licensed vet's salary is $700/month. A stethoscope is $20. A surgical table is $400. Surgical pans are $20, the thing you use to position the dog while you operate is $100. $25 covers the cost of one sterilization.
I want to raise enough for one year of the vet's salary ($8,500), the machine needed to do blood tests in order to safely operate and give vaccinations ($500) and a few months of rent. I'll accept tax consequences of the GoFundMe, and will transfer the money to Alma Animal via PayPal, in tranches as it comes in.
It's a terrible time for me to ask for money - 2020 has been a bitch, to say the least.
I would never beg (and yes, I'm begging) if it wasn't something very near and dear to my heart, and urgently needed.
Skip a week of $4 lattes, donate $20, and help turn this around.
Where the government won't, we will. Will you help?
