Tulane Medical for Tibetan Refugee Health

This July, our team of nine students from Tulane School of Medicine will be traveling to Dharamshala in Northern India to provide medical evaluations for Tibetan refugees under the guidance of Dr. Rebekah Byrne. Dharamshala is home to the Dalai Lama and the largest community of exiled Tibetan Refugees. This community faces many health-related obstacles. In a new environment with minimal resources, many Tibetan refugees endure unnecessary suffering and some die due to lack of funds and/or confusion about Western medical care. Our goal is to help those refugees who can't afford medical care, while striving also to provide preventative care and community-focused health education. We will be working with the Louisiana Himalaya Association (lhainfo.org), local health care providers, and the Tibetan refugee community itself to address these obstacles during our visit.
We are asking for your support to help us cover the expenses of the treatments and referrals we recommend to our patients. We anticipate that many of the refugees we see will need urgent or non-urgent care that they are unable to afford. Last year, Dr. Byrne’s team completed 182 screenings during their visit. Of those, 149 were referred for dental services, 69 were referred for vision services, and 115 were referred for further medical follow up.
-Medical referrals cost an average of 15.00 USD, which includes medications prescribed
-Dental referrals cost an average of 35.00 USD, which includes cleaning and procedures
-Vision referrals cost an average of 25.00 USD, which includes glasses prescribed
100% of every donation will be used to pay for our patients’ treatments. None of your donation will be used to cover overhead expenses or managerial costs.
