Charles Aaron Cancer Treatment Fund

If you were ever a fan of SPIN Magazine, you are a fan of Charles Aaron. From 1991 to 2011, his incisive wit, editorial vision, and acrobatic, lyrical voice made the magazine what it was – all while he inspired countless others to dance about architecture in a better, brighter, deeper way. A man of impeccable taste, a passionate advocate for great art in all its forms, a devoted father, and an important, vital person in the lives of countless people, Charles has always given freely of his heart, time, and talents. We now have the opportunity to give freely to him in his time of need.

And this is a time of need. This June, Charles received a diagnosis of multiple myeloma following a procedure excising one of two tumors called plasmacytomas located on either side of his brain. In July, additional tumors on his pelvis, spine, and ribs were discovered. In addition, a bone-marrow biopsy procedure went awry, damaging part of his pelvic area and severely limiting his mobility. Charles just completed a first round of radiation and will be starting a month of chemotherapy shortly, both of which are expected to continue indefinitely (in some form), followed by a probable stem-cell transplant. We need to surround Charles with all the love, care, and support we can offer while he undergoes treatment. The situation necessitates that he have extensive logistical and financial support, as well, and that is where this GoFundMe comes in.

Charles has not been able to work for several months because of symptoms caused by the tumors on his brain – most notably, damage to an optic nerve which has resulted in a permanent loss of right-eye vision. It is evident that he will not be in a position to resume writing or editing professionally for quite some time due to the treatment he will be receiving. Funds are vitally needed to facilitate everything from basic living expenses, costs involved in the treatment itself, and additional resources to support his physical and emotional well-being. While Charles has insurance that he pays for himself as a self-employed person, as well as people around him who are able to assist with logistics and implementation of his care, he is not as well-resourced financially.

We estimate that $40,000 will be needed to begin to cover the bases. Thank you for your consideration.
