Tristan was injured in 2016 while playing in the back yard. The injury was life threating and caused extensive brain damage. Tristan was not suppose to recover from the injury and was not going to have the use of his arms or legs, he would not be able to learn new things, he was suppose to have memory issues. Tough News for Nicole and I.
After searching for pediatric rehab programs that would be willing to take Tristan we discovered the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago. This is a state of the Art facility with a staff that was willing to take a gamble and work with Tristan even though his prognosis was grim. We have since been to Shirley Ryan 3 times for a total of 90 secessions. During this secession Tristan receives Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy. Tristan will need 90 additional visits in 2019, insurance will only cover 30 visits per calendar year.
The progress Tristan has made through therapy is "nothing short of a miracle" according to Doctors and Therapists. Tristan can support his own weight while standing, he is beginning to take steps using a walker with assistance, he even made a basket while playing pop-a-shot.
Tristan's memory recall is improving, last week he went to a Chicago Bulls game and was able to remember the event the next day.
We need to continue to send Tristan to therapy in 2019 and take advantage of the progress he has made.
Nicole and I feel its important for Tristan to receive 3 hours of therapy each day. An hour in each of the three disciplines--Speech, Occupational, and Physical therapy.
The cost breakdown for each discipline:
Speech Therapy - $440 per hour
Occupational Therapy - $556 per hour
Physical Therapy - $660 per hour.
Total out of pocket per day - $1,656
We have also been looking at Brooks Rehab in Jacksonville FL. They have a piece of equipment called HAL that can help Tristan make the connections from the brain to the legs that will help Tristan relearn to walk.
At this time we are hoping to go to Jacksonville in Feb 2019 for an extended period of 12 weeks.
Brooks Rehab will not accept Insurance, we will need to pay for that treatment 100% out of pocket along with living expenses for the 12 weeks while we are staying in Jacksonville.
