Trip to Manila, Philippines

Donation protected
This spring I have an opportunity to take a Global Child Welfare class at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, that includes a two-week travel component to Manila, Philippines. In the course, I will gain holistic understanding of the major challenges faced by some of the world’s most vulnerable children (e.g., human trafficking and commercial sex trade, child labor and exploitation, the orphan crisis) and the factors that place them at greatest risk of vulnerability (e.g., poverty, poor health care and education, gender-based discrimination).  Specifically, we will be learning and working in Rowenas, a “squatter” community. More than two million people in Metro Manila -- or roughly one fifth of the sprawling city's population – live as informal settlers. With poverty stripping away choices, almost any type of vacant land is considered an opportunity with many building make-shift homes in flood-prone areas, which put them at great risk

I am excited about the opportunity and experiences that are ahead. I look forward to seeing how God will use me in my short time with this population. I am so grateful that this is the opportunity I have for my first time out of the country! I think this trip will benefit me in being able to gain a better understanding of the needs of vulnerable people and further equip me to work in the Social Work field.

Would you please pray for the preparation and ministry of our class? Pray that we may be open to learn from those we will serve with and that God will be able to use this time to open our hearts to this vulnerable population. Pray that, even in the short amount of time we are there, we would be bold enough to be a light to each person we encounter. I believe that much of what will happen in this class and our time in the Philippines will depend on the prayers of our supporters.

If you are able, I would greatly appreciate your financial support as well. Each member of the class needs to raise $2,300.00 to make the trip possible. I am seeking support from family and friends, like you, to join me in this educational and ministry opportunity.

Our first installment of $1200 is due by November 14th with the remaining balance due January 18th.

Thank you for your consideration. I am excited to see how the Lord will use this class to expand our knowledge and show us more of His heart. I look forward to sharing about our experiences when I return.

With love,
Abby
