Trike For Thuy

Twenty eight year old Thuy was born and raised in Ottawa and has lived here her whole life. At the age of fifteen, Thuy required brain surgery for a condition called Arteriovenous Malformations. Something went wrong during the procedure, causing a massive stroke. Doctors didn’t know whether walking, eating, and even talking again would ever be possible. However, with a lot of physio and rehabilitation, and even more determination, Thuy regained all those capacities. Thuy will always struggle with semi-paralysis on her right side, and battles depression which is likely a consequence of the ways her brain was injured by the stroke.
Thuy is unable to ride a regular bicycle or run, so almost a decade ago her family purchased her a Catrike recumbent tricyle. The tricycle is her main source of transportation most months of the year, and is an essential part of her emotional and physical health, helping to strengthen her core, improve her mood, boost her spirits and expand her social network. This social network has allowed her to more fully recover her speech, and she is known and loved for her radiant smile and ready laugh.
In 2008, Thuy connected the founder of Happy Goat Coffee at a dance event for people with physical disabilities. As Happy Goat started up, she assisted with administrative duties and eventually she delivered personal bags of coffee to homes all over Ottawa with her Catrike tricyle.
On the night of July 27, Thuy was hit by an OC Transpo double decker bus. Fate ensured that she was not physically injured, but the bike is not repairable. We are asking for $4000 to replace the trike and purchase some accessories such as saddlebags and flags to make it safer and more useful.
In honour of Thuy’s journey, any donation funds that exceed this amount will be donated to the Brain Injury Association Of The Ottawa Valley. Thank you for reaching into your hearts to help us sustain this deserving friend.
