Tribeworthy- Uniting News Consumers

The Elevator Pitch

People today gather their news online in complete isolation. You click on a headline- alone. You read an article and try to make sense of it- alone. When you’re done reading you exit out and do nothing to help the next reader. But it doesn’t have to be this way. What if right when you land on a news story, you could see if your peers trust the information, and the specific reasons why some don’t. What if before exiting a poorly written article you could warn the next reader and hold the author or news outlet accountable with your review.

At Tribeworthy , we believe connecting and empowering news consumers will raise the standards of online journalism. It’s what we call Crowd Contested Media, and we believe it’s the only safe, uncensored way to protect news consumers. This idea was born out of personal frustration. We couldn’t understand why someone could hold a restaurant accountable on Yelp, but not a news outlet. Why is it that we can review a movie on Rotten Tomatoes, but not an online article.

No one else was even talking about the platform we wanted, so we decided to build it ourselves. We’re here today raising money so we can continue to build the platform news consumers need. The platform that will forever change how we gather and critique information online.

The Problem

There’s no way for news consumers to hold news producers accountable for their work. Comment sections are being shut down and letters to the editor are long dead, so we’re left feeling frustrated and powerless. Since news consumers don’t have a voice no one can see what information other readers trust and distrust, which means we can’t look out for each other.

Until news consumers unify together, we can expect the onslaught of clickbaity and sensationalized stories to continue. Unfortunately, news outlets trying to survive need your click more than your trust. Your click can easily be monetized, but earning a reader’s trust is not always rewarded financially.

What we need is a way for news consumers to reward quality journalism by sending more traffic to those websites. But first, we need to know which sources and articles deserve our attention, and to find out we’ll have to critique them all.

Our Solution

"If we can hold restaurants accountable on Yelp, ultimately improving the food industry, why can't we hold news producers accountable?”

We needed a review platform specifically for news consumers, and in January 2016 we decided to build it ourselves. Today on tribeworthy.com, readers like yourself are posting and reviewing articles daily- making it easy to find the most trusted stories. When a user wants to contest an article, our review process helps them be specific in their critique. The more specific and helpful the review, the more it’s up-voted by the community.

It was great to finally give news consumers a voice on our website, but we still aren’t there when people need us most. We want to protect our users when they’re away from our site. We want them to have the protection of the rating and the ability to review no matter where they go.

Your contribution will allow us to build the Tribeworthy Browser Extension for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. This means being able to review an article right then and there, without even having to visit tribeworthy.com . It also means protecting news consumers with our rating info no matter where they go on the web. It’s the perfect “extension” of our current website and we hope you want it as bad as we do.

Who We Are

Jared Fesler, Chase Palmieri, and Austin Walter are the three co-founders building Tribeworthy out of personal need. They’re also great friends, roommates, news junkies, and incredibly motivated to solve this problem. We were tired of sitting around and complaining about the news, so we committed ourselves to action. So far we’ve spent $26,000 of our own money and put in over 7,000 hours on the platform. We moved into a house in Petaluma, Ca where we work every day to connect and empower news consumers.

Join Us

Please give what you can to support this mission. It’s our promise that every dime contributed will go straight into building an amazing tool for you and your fellow news consumers. Remember, this is a problem being felt worldwide and our solution is built to scale. So no matter where you’re from or what language you get your news in, we hope you agree that this is the future worth fighting for.
Thank you so much.
