Triathlon against Crohn's Disease

Raising funds for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation

Each year I look to take on a new challenge that will test me both physically and mentally.  For 2017, I decided to participate in a Half Ironman Triathlon in Arizona.  This 70.3 mile endurance event requires countless hours of physical training, mental preparation and nutritional support to make sure that I am able to manage each discipline of the sport on the course.  This race will take me about 5+ hours to complete and is not an easy task no matter what level of athlete you are. The key to successfully completing this race will be my ability to be disciplined in my training while balancing my family life and work life.

This year, I decided to approach this challenge differently.  Instead of just participating in the event I wanted to do something bigger than myself.  I decided to team up with Team Challenge (a philanthropic Triathlon Team) and raise funds for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.  Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (UC) affect more than 700,000 people in the US.  Also known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease or (IBD), is an auto-immune disease that attacks your intestines and digestive tract.  Unpredictable flare ups and inflamation affects every day activities that we often take for granted like eating, exercising or going to the bathroom. The worst part about this disease is its unpredictability and not knowing when it will be active.  I am not personally affected by this, but I have several close friend and family members that do suffer from this horrible disease.  This my opportunity to contribute to finding a solution for Crohn’s and Colitis Disease.

By participating in the Arizona Half Ironman Triathlon, I want to share more about IBD and raise awareness.   I will only have to endure one day of swimming, biking and running for 70.3 miles.  Those living with the disease have a much longer race to endure.  To help those suffering with Crohn’s Disease and UC, it is my goal to raise $3,500 and donate every dollar to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.  Through this fundraiser I hope to help pave the way to bring awareness, increase education and find a cure for this disease.

As this is truly a team effort, I will be sharing via social media this journey from training's to information and stories relating to Crohns and Colitis Disease all the way through race day on October 22nd.  I will also be recognizing all donors during the race in AZ.
