Our amazing friends and neighbors son was diagnosed with HUS this past week. HUS - Hemolytic uremic syndrome is a condition that affects the blood and blood vessels. It results in the destruction of blood platelets (cells involved in clotting), a low red blood cell count (anemia), and kidney failure due to damage to the very small blood vessels of the kidneys. Other organs, such as the brain or heart, may also be affected by damage to very small blood vessels. 
He is doing better due to a special blood transfusion he had to undergo that cost $500,000. And he is currently undergoing dialysis for several weeks. I'm glad to say they do have medical insurance, however, they will still have to pay a large portion of all medical bills which will be substantial.
