My friends, Heidi and Alan are followers of Jesus who have spent their entire marriage following God’s call to missional living. (They have some interesting stories of how God has dropped the provision on them to do the impossible thing He called them to do.) They are gentle, humble servants with ambition only to please God. They and their three adolescent children currently live in one bedroom in another family member’s home. Together they earn less than $45k annually. In August one of their cars died. They are juggling transportation for their mismatched work schedules and their kid’s events with one car. In October their oldest daughter, Tressa suffered heat stroke during a school-sponsored ROTC parade event held outdoors in 98-degree heat. Initial tests show that the heat stroke caused cerebellar brain damage. Tressa has difficulty walking, talking and focusing (she can still sing, though!) Official diagnosis of the existence and extent of brain damage will occur on Dec 13. While the school district has been supportive in providing medical resources to Tressa, the family, as a whole, is in extreme crisis. Having just one car is a big challenge. Sometimes one of them has to skip work (and not get paid) in order to get Tressa to an appointment. The emotional toll of having a family member severely disabled is significant. The other children are having trouble functioning and their grades are dropping. Heidi is the only one functioning minimally and she senses that her body is going to give out if the pace continues. If Tressa is to recover, the future holds a strenuous therapy schedule and, perhaps, some need for advocacy in getting things done while Heidi and Alan work.
God has placed on my heart a burden to gather assistance for some of their more immediate needs: transportation and family therapy. Please pray about partnering with me in this effort. I figure if everyone does a little, no one has to do a lot.
