Trent Oldfield's Medical Fund

Donation protected
Dear friends and family,

In response to requests to be able to donate monies to Trent and his future medical costs once he leaves the hospital,  I have enabled this gofundme account. We are humbled by the outpouring of support, to say the very least.

I was asked by one of my dear friends,  what happened to Trent. And I wanted to share with you all what happened, for those of you who dont know.

On May 24th of this year, Trent and Sharon were out in Lundar, MB helping Sharons mom clean up the cottage. After having worked in the yard, Trent decided to run from the shore into the lake, to cool off. That decision changed his life forever.

He ran in, to about knee/thigh height and dove, hitting a sandbar that fractured his cervical spine at levels 4, 5 and 6. He immediately lost all function and began to drown as he could not use his arms or legs. Sharon rescued him from the lake and CPR was performed to save his life.

Trent underwent an 8 hour surgery the next day once he had been transferred to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. His spine was fused from levels c3-t2 to ensure no further damage to the spinal cord. We were told at that time that there was a 99.9% chance he would not ever walk again.

Well, 4 months later, through blood, sweat and tears, I am happy to report that Trent is walking, unassisted, under his own power. There is still recovery that we would love to see happen for him, however, he is proof that miracles do really happen.....

The purpose of this gofundme account (and the November 1st fundraiser) is that at the time of the accident, Trent had just started a new job (4 days on the new job), and sadly has no insurance. So, Trent has no income at this point as we still wait for EI sickness benefits to kick in (which is only a 15 week commitment from the government). Regardless, this will not near be enough to purchase a wheelchair and other equipment he will need to function outside of the hospital walls. Sharon and Trents home may also need to be retorfitted to accommodate his level of function (bars, safety equipment, new tub etc)

Any support you can provide, we would be eternally grateful. I cannot say thank you enough.....

Gratefully yours,

Our family
