Trek for the cure

My name is Wilfredo "Nika" Garcia.  I live in Washington, DC and I love playing sports and spending time with my three kids.  I thought I'd live the kind of life most dads do when they hit their 40s; working, getting ready to send my kids off to college and looking forward to many happy years with my family but on August 25th, 2013, everything changed. After experiencing intense abdominal pain for over ten hours, I took myself to the hospital and got the shock of my life.  A tumor the size of a grapefruit in my abdominal wall had ruptured. "I don't know how you're still standing", one doctor said.  Apparently, the tumor was bleeding into my body cavity.  The doctors scheduled tests and when the biopsy came back, my worst fears were confirmed, "you have cancer" Stage 4 Abdominal Myxoid Liposarcoma. I was completely devastated (as anyone would be getting such awful news).  All I wanted to know was how long I have left.  " That's the funny thing", the doctors said "we don't really know". With those words,  the battle began. It's been a five year journey of highs and lows. Searching for a possible cure. The type of cancer I have is rare - so rare that the National Institute of Health (NIH) took an interest in my case. It's been a blur of tests, treatments and experimental  trials.  I've received two rounds of aggressive chemotherapy, five and a half weeks of radiation therapy and I was part of an eleven month experimental trial drug to shrink my tumors with no success.  I've had four surgeries, the most recent one in May 2017 which was ten and a half hour procedure.  On a regular check up in November 2017, they found a new tumor the size of a marble. I'm staying positive and grateful for the love and support of my family and friends but I am growing more concerned because the treatments that I need I can not afford.  There are more treatment options out there than what's being offered to me at a costly price. My doctors have told me, point blank, that there's no cure for my cancer. But I'm not ready to give up.  I have three kids and I want to be there for them; to see them accomplish all their goals.   I want to know that I exhausted every option and left no stone unturned in my battle to beat cancer.  My surgeries have made it impossible for me to work, but I don't have time to feel sorry for myself.  I stay active as much as possible to keep my strength up and my no-excuses attitude helps me keep going. What I'm asking for is a fighting chance. My goal is $100,000.00 which would cover travel expenses and two (2) rounds of treatment at Chipsa Hospital which is valued at $48,000.00 each. Thank you so much for your support and your time.  I like to say,  " I don't have cancer-cancer has me".  I'm fighting hard and I'm not going anywhere.  Your help makes a huge difference and inspires me to keep tyring.
