Travis Hurd's Wheelchair Fund

Donation protected
**UPDATE**
THANK YOU to everyone that has donated! We have ordered the wheelchair. It should be here in about a week! We are all so excited for this!

I have received many requests from people that are still wanting to donate, so I did increase the goal. We do have a need to fix his current chair. We will have to pay out of pocket to fix the post that holds the seat to the base. This old chair needs to be in working condition as a back up for the new chair.

Thank you again to everyone for being so generous!

We are raising money for Travis Hurd, a disabled veteran, and detention sergeant for Washington County, OK.

What We Are Purchasing

Travis is a quadriplegic and is in great need of a new wheelchair. Insurance has approved a Permobil F3 Corpus. They are paying for 80% of the cost, but we are still responsible for 20%. This will be about $4,000 out of pocket. Here is a link to a video demonstrating the new chair.

Why A New Chair Is Needed
Travis has been in his current wheelchair for 6 years. The seat is broken, so he sits leaning to the right all the time. The arm pads and seat back are peeling, the tires are bald, and the battery won't hold a charge. The company that makes this chair has ruled it obsolete, so the parts are no longer available. Also, this old chair has no tilt in space capability like his new chair. Travis cannot elevate his legs, recline the back, or raise the seat. These functions would greatly improve his quality of life.

Travis is married to Rene Hurd of Bartlesville, OK and has a 16 year old daughter, Erica, that is a Junior at Bartlesville High School.

The Accident
On February 27th, 2005, Travis Hurd was a passenger in a vehicle that hydroplaned due to rain-slicked roads. The car went off the road and struck a tree. Travis suffered a broken neck and was lifelighted to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, OK. He spent 3 months in rehabilitation. He is an incomplete C6-C7 quadriplegic.

Despite any limitations, Travis has fought hard to live a normal and full life. This wheelchair will make that an even greater possibility. Thank you for taking the time to read Travis' story. All donations are greatly appreciated.
