Travel Scooter

I grew up in Illinois, but from a young age I dreamed of all the places I wanted to see all over the world. I even made it to Italy for a semester in college. I’ve always been a bit of adventurer. So after college I decided to move West to California from Illinois. Half of my family lived there and I was eager to live by the ocean. I had always wanted to learn to surf. California is so different than the Midwest, there was more time to be outside, there were mountains, an ocean, beautiful cities and yes even beautiful highways. But in 2010 I couldn’t ignore that there was something wrong with my legs. I could no longer go up and down stairs without pulling myself with my arms. Shortly after I was diagnosed with limb girdle muscular dystrophy. Basically my legs are getting weaker and there isn’t any medical treatment to help them stay strong. At first when Doctors told me I would end up in a wheel chair, i didn’t really know what to think. I could still swim and bike and I wasn’t even using a cane to walk around, just using the occasional shoulder to lean on when I need to get up and down a curb or step. I mostly just felt myself slowing down. It’s been 8 years since my diagnosis of Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy 2B,  I have tried to remain active, but because of consecutive falls and breaks I am no longer able to walk long distances with just my crutches. It has made it harder for me to participate in my life. I am so fortunate to have friends and family in Illinois, Texas and California. But my circumstances has made it harder to travel the country to see my family. But with a travel scooter I hope to gain back some of my independence and spirit of adventure. I hope to get to see more of the people and places I love.
