Catherine Star McMillian Executive Director of Homes 2 Home Youth Services (H2H) and Luqman Abdullah Executive Director of Family & Community Engagement Action Team (Face-A-Team) is a collaborated incorporated not-for-profit in the City of Philadelphia.
First, I would like to thank you for visiting this site where I can give you more information about Trauma to Nutrition Fundraiser and our organizations. H2H & FACE-A-Team’s goal is to provide emergency housing for youth 12 to 18 years of age.
Trauma and nutrition goes hand and hand with poverty-stricken communities being one of the most affected regarding the lack of basic nutrition in homes. One of our goals will be to promote and maintain healthy nutrition with the population that we serve. This will include educating and developing a plan that will assist our families in becoming successful with healthy opportunities in their communities. We will continue to pursue the healthy development of families that we serve for stronger communities throughout Philadelphia.
Philadelphia has one of the highest poverty rates. The deep poverty rate is 12.3 percent of the population, or 186,000 individuals. Deep poverty is defined as an annual income of less than $12,000 for a family of four. Many individuals in deep poverty are experiencing homelessness.
The opioid crisis has created a new population of homeless individuals.
Domestic violence, mental illness, and young people aging out of foster care all contribute to the increase in the population of individuals experiencing homelessness in our city.
Our emergency shelters will offer:
A safe haven for eligible children, 24 hours a day, seven days a week
Formal on-site education program with certified Philadelphia, Public Schools teachers
Structured daily living programs employing positive behavior modification techniques
Mental-health counseling
Life-skills groups to promote responsibility and independence
Substance-abuse prevention services
Family reunification services and case management
Activities such as arts and crafts and music to promote positive youth development
Health-care coordination services to ensure access to medical treatment
FACE-A-Team & H2H are looking to make a difference in the lives of the youth in the City of Philadelphia, create job opportunities, feed families and expand our program by obtaining more buildings to expand the program.
I wanted to take this opportunity to briefly share with you why I am so passionate about making a difference in the lives of homeless youths.
Star McMillan’s Story
I am all too familiar with foster homes and being homeless. I lived in several foster homes as a young child from 1987-1996. I spent 9 years in kinship care with my grandparents before being reunited with my mother and siblings. In addition, I suffered a major culture shock and lacked the skills needed to lead a productive life. I became a teen mother at the age of 17, and for 14 years fought through depression, post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), abandonment issues, domestic violence, and homelessness.
After overcoming those challenges, I made it my mission to help other children with similar backgrounds gain the necessary skills to lead successful and productive lives. H2H & Face-A-Team is prepared and committed to helping children in our community navigate their journey. Today, I humbly request a donation on behalf of the Homes 2 Homes & Face-A-Team organization.
