Many may know the story of Robert and Belinda Peetz through the powerful words of their daughter, Summers Smeaton, author of "Through Water and Fire." Their family’s journey through unimaginable loss has been bravely shared with the world in the Focus on the Family interview, "Grieving With Purpose: Finding Hope After Suicide Loss." But behind this courageous story of faith and survival lies a private, daily wound that has yet to heal—a place where their deepest trauma remains frozen in time.

For the Peetz family, the world stopped turning on January 12, 2022. On that day, the unthinkable shattered the peace of their home when their precious 15-year-old grandson, Shilo, tragically took his own life in their hall bathroom.

In the final, sacred moments of his young life, it was his grandmother Bela, who was blessed with the assignment by his mother to hold him close as Summer’s got help. Straddling the bathtub, in a scene of unimaginable horror, her love was a fierce and defiant light. She held her sweet grandson, kissing his beautiful face and whispering over and over again how deeply he was loved, how valuable he was, how precious he would always be to them all. Her love for him was so profound that it transcended the awful reality of his head wound, allowing her to offer comfort and tenderness in his last moments on earth. It was a grandmother's final, desperate blessing over a life ended far too soon.

The shock wave of that day sent a loving, close-knit family into a free fall of grief. Their hearts were not just broken; they were crushed. But the darkness was relentless. Only days after laying their beloved grandson to rest, another heart-stopping blow came. Their eldest son was in a horrific car accident, leaving him with devastating spinal, back, and brain injuries. Robert and Bela were on the next flight to Tampa, praying for a miracle. After long, agonizing months of pain and uncertainty, their son survived and began the arduous road to recovery.

Grief, however, is no respecter of persons. Wave after wave continued to crash over them. In the spring of 2023, after a long battle with congestive heart failure, Bela’s beloved father passed away peacefully in her care, in her own home.

In late fall of 2023 November, Robert broke his back (T9, T10, and 5 wing bones) while leaving an eye appointment. He’s strong and recovery is sustained, but with great measures of caution. The following month, a few days after Christmas, Belinda had a lapse in her memory for several days…Shortly after a phone call with a pastor friend she had no clue what she had just done. She kept repeating herself. Her son took her vitals and asked her some deep probing questions. She cried out and sobbed in complete shock as she had no memory of those questions asked. Her family rushed her to hospital, where many tests were taken… in short, they found 2 small aneurysms. Doctors concluded the aneurysms found were not connected to her memory loss.

Through all this unimaginable loss and heartache, one wound has remained open—a constant, painful reminder of the day their world changed forever. The bathroom where Shilo took his last breath remains untouched, a silent witness to the family’s deepest pain. Every day, it serves as a remnant of that horrifying moment, making it impossible to escape the trauma. This is where their public story meets a private, tangible need.
