Tragic collapse of horse barn, loss of heart horse

Donation protected
On the morning of Jan 17, I got up to do my usual routine, not knowing that I was about to discover a horrifying tragedy that no horse person, or any other person, can comprehend.

Everything seemed usual, I looked out at my herd of mostly rescue horses to find them huddled together, almost on top of each other, in a corner of their pasture.  They stared intensely.

I followed the direction of their stare, over the snow covered ground to discover a gnarled heap of rubble that used to be their barn.

But wait, there was one horse missing from the group...my heart horse, Merlin.

My husband was quicker than me, he ran out to check for Merlin...

...then I heard the blood curdling scream that echoed throughout the valley and back again, over and over.

It was a nightmare that I waited to wake up from for several days as I watched his body being cut out of the rubble and hauled out of the wreck.

But I never woke up...

And neither did Merlin.  He was neatly curled up sleeping on his left side.  He probably heard the thundering hooves but that was the end.

Such a tragic end to life of a being who was one with me...

A bond that can only happen with that once in a lifetime horse.

His herd mates, fled to safety, but are now without a shelter.  And their winter hay stored within the wreck, is open to the elements and spoilage.

Please help us...what we need is to replace the barn and hay storage.  It was an open ended structure for freedom of movement.  There were feeders down both sides with round bales in hay nets.  One side was used for the hay storage and had metal panels to separate the horses from the hay.  There was lighting for the dark winter nights and a small paddock for our mini, who needs to be kept off the hay as he's an easy keeper.

Our estimated costs of replacement and clean up are $71,500.  This will remove the debris and replace the barn with a smaller barn for shelter and hay storage.

There is no way to replace my horse who perished in the collapse, but your help for the other horses and hay is much needed.

Labor and equipment would also be very much appreciated.

Funds are needed as soon as possible.  We are in the middle of winter with much snow and cold temperatures.  A new shelter would be hugely appreciated by us all.

I'm Christine Adderson.  I've rescued many horses, I educate horses and people and have dedicated most of my life to the well being of horses.
