Trace’s Fight Against ALD

Matt and Britany Thompson recently received heartbreaking news that their 9 year old son, Trace, has been diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). ALD is a very rare genetic disorder that affects the nerves in the brain controlling functions such as thinking and muscle control. This degenerative neurological condition is life-threatening and disproportionately affects young males.

Trace was originally diagnosed with Addison’s disease after recent unexplained hospitalizations. While searching for the root cause of Addison’s disease, the diagnosis of ALD was discussed. After a positive blood test and a subsequent MRI, they confirmed this diagnosis. Unfortunately, there is no cure for ALD. A bone marrow transplant and gene therapy are the only procedures used to help slow the progression of this disease. After consulting numerous doctors in both Tallahassee and Gainesville, Britany and Matt traveled with Trace to Minnesota to meet with a care team who specialize in pediatric ALD. The doctors informed the family that Trace is ineligible for gene therapy, and that a bone marrow transplant would be his best option. A bone marrow transplant carries many risk in itself and could potentially activate disease progression, so it has not been an easy decision, but this family is willing to do everything they can to help Trace fight ALD. 

We are starting this Go Fund Me page to ease the financial burden on the Thompson family as they navigate through this difficult journey. All funds raised will help cover travel costs to/from Minnesota, out-of-pocket medical bills, and living expenses. These upcoming days, weeks and months will require Matt to spend a significant amount of time away from his job. We are hoping to alleviate the financial burden so their family can focus on Trace as he fights for his life.

The Thompson family are not the type to ask for help, but at this time their family and friends know financial support will be helpful in their ability to focus on Trace’s care and this difficult journey ahead. Matt, Britany, Trace and Daughtry truly appreciate all of your love, support and prayers!
