Il a aussi la main gauche qui tremble. Nous n’imaginons pas que notre vie va être totalement bouleversée lorsque nous l’emmenons à une visite médicale pour ce que nous pensons être une faiblesse musculaire. Le diagnostic tombe. Anatole est atteint d’une tumeur cérébrale au thalamus, appelée gliome diffus de la ligne médiane, combinée à une mutation H3 K27M qui rend le pronostic encore plus sombre puisqu’elle classe la tumeur d’Anatole directement au grade 4, le plus agressif. Le taux de survie des patients est de 10% à deux ans, 1% à cinq ans. Les chiffres nous donnent la nausée. De nouvelles thérapies sont en développement. De rares cas de rémission existent. Nous nous accrochons de toutes nos forces à cette idée. Eté 2018, Anatole suit courageusement un premier protocole défini par l’hôpital Karolinska de Stockholm et l’institut Gustave Roussy de Paris. Il suit 6 semaines de prothonthérapie suivie d’une chimiothérapie innovante. Malgré cela, la tumeur d’Anatole progresse. Peu à peu atteint d’hémiparésie, Anatole perd en autonomie. Les muscles fonctionnent mais il n’arrive plus à contrôler le côté gauche de son corps, il “l’oublie”. Il n’utilise plus sa main gauche, il se déplace en fauteuil roulant la plupart du temps. Jamais il ne se plaint. Au fil des mois, son état se dégrade. En janvier, il a la moitié du visage “figée”, il parle de moins en moins distinctement. La tumeur continue de grossir et tend tout doucement vers le cervelet. Le traitement n’apportant pas d’amélioration est stoppé. Nous nous tournons vers d’autres avis, explorons d’autres pistes, découvrons d’autres approches. Nous remuons ciel et terre pour trouver ce qui se fait de mieux partout ailleurs dans le monde. Le temps presse pour Anatole et nous sommes désemparés. Février 2019, nous nous orientons vers un traitement dénommé ONC201. De l’avis des équipes de Stockholm et de Paris, cet essai clinique est, à l’heure actuelle, le plus prometteur. Il a donné de très bons résultats chez les adultes atteints de glioblastome, une tumeur extrêmement agressive, et est désormais proposé aux enfants. Nous envoyons le dossier médical d’Anatole qui correspond aux critères pour intégrer l’essai. Seul bémol : ONC201 est un essai clinique proposé uniquement aux USA. Les systèmes de santé suédois et français ne couvrent pas les essais hors Europe, même s’ils sont prometteurs. Nous devons donc nous débrouiller seuls. Nous sommes aujourd'hui en mesure de faire le point sur notre situation financière pour qu'Anatole ait accès aux soins du Children's National Medical Center de Washington DC. Celui-ci nous a demandé une garantie financière de US$ 102 000 pour pouvoir commencer le traitement. Ce fut un choc mais nous avons pu effectuer le versement grâce à votre prodigieuse générosité. Nous avons pu rebondir, accepter la nouvelle donne sans hésiter. Ce fut un soulagement énorme, sachez-le. A ce jour, les frais médicaux engagés totalisent deux acomptes s'élevant en tout à US$ 158 000 (56 000 a Houston et 102 000 a Washington). Les frais connexes ont jusqu'à présent été minimisés grâce à l'aide de personnes extraordinaires qui ont pris en charge nos billets d'avion et notre logement. Pour la suite, ils restent estimatifs, à hauteur de US$ 10 000 sur les 6 prochains mois, basés sur 8 allers-retours en avion Stockholm-Washington plus hébergement sur place pour les séjours de contrôle. Soit au total la somme vertigineuse de 150 000 Euros. Depuis mai, nous avons entamé avec Anatole un long voyage au pays des enfants malades. Jusqu’ici c’était un voyage immobile. Aujourd’hui, il devient bien réel et surtout indispensable. Un voyage qui s’annonce et l’espérance, petite flamme vive dont la lumière change tout. He lives in Sweden with his parents and his big sister. He loves to play with Lego, watch Star Wars and play rugby. He absolutely adores talking about his trips and dreams of becoming an engineer-technician-researcher-explorer. His left hand has been shaking. We don’t realise at that moment in time that our lives are about to be completely turned upside down as we take him to a doctor’s appointment for what we assume to be a muscle weakness.  The diagnosis comes as a bolt from the blue.  Anatole has a brain tumour, also known as diffuse midline glioma on the thalamus, combined with a H3 K27M mutation, which makes a poor prognosis even bleaker as it puts Anatole’s tumour straight up there as stage 4, the most agressive form of cancer. Patient’s survival at this stage is of 10% 2 years on, and only 1% at 5 years. These numbers make us sick to our stomach. We make sure to remember that new treatments are coming to light. People going into remission aren’t unheard of, albeit rare. We hold on to this thought with everything we have. By Summer 2018, Anatole is bravely following an initial protocol put in place by the Karolinska Hospital of Stockholm and l’Institut Gustave Roussy in Paris. First, 6 weeks of proton therapy. Then, an innovative form of chemotherapy. Despite this, the tumour is growing. Due to hemiparesis, Anatole is gradually losing his physical independence. His muscles are still working but he can no longer control the left side of his body, almost like “forgetting” it’s even there. He no longer uses his left hand, and requires a wheelchair to get around most of the time. But he never complains. Over the following months, Anatole’s condition gradually worsens. By January, half of his face is permanently “frozen”, his speech has become less and less articulate. The tumour has continued to grow and is making its way towards the cerebellum. Any treatment proving ineffective is stopped. We seek new opinions, explore different options and learn of any alternative methods out there.  We leave no stone unturned to find the best possible solution out there for our son. Time is running out for Anatole and we feel at a loss. In February 2019, we decide to turn towards a treatment called ONC201. According to both the teams at Stockholm and Paris, this clinical trial is, for now, the best hope we have. It’s shown great results in adults diagnosed with glioblastoma, an extremely agressive form of brain tumour, and is now being trialed on children. We send off Anatole’s medical record straight away as his profile fits that of the criteria required to be part of the trial. The only downside is that ONC201 is a clinical trial being offered solely in the United States and the healthcare systems in France and Sweden don’t cover trials outside of Europe, even those that look extremely promising. We are going to have to do this on our own.  Two centres in the US get back to us, one from Houston and the other Miami, with a devastating blow - The preliminary evaluation week alone costs 58 000 USD. On top of this, we’d have to add 2500 USD for Anatole and one parent to accompany him for a week. The total cost of the overall treatment will be evaluated after this protocol is set in stone, but so far estimates an on-site examination every three weeks, for at least the first 6 months, meaning 8 trips there and back coming to around 4800 USD.  Given the uncertainty of the additional fees, we will adjust the overall amount of this fundraiser as soon as we have a clearer idea of the total budget.  ! Han använder inte längre sin vänsterhand, han förflyttar sin främst I rullstol. Anatole klagar aldrig. Månaderna går och Anatole mar sämre. I januari har halva ansiktet stelnat, hans tal blir därför otydligt. Tumören växer och närmar sig nu lillhjärnan (?). Behandlingen avbryts då den inte ger resultat. Vi vänder oss till nya metoder, utforskar andra vägar, pågående studier. Vi vänder på varje sten, vi letar över hela världen efter de senaste och mest positiva resultaten för att pröva nya behandlingar. Tiden rusar framåt och för Anatole börjar det bli bråttom. Februari 2019, vi väljer att inrikta oss på en behandling kalla ONC201. Enligt läkarna på Karolinska och Gustave Roussy är det den kliniska studie som är mest lovande. Den har redan gett mycket bra resultat på vuxna med aggressiva tumörer och den erbjuds nu till barn. Vi skriver en ansökan och skickar Anatoles medicinska journal som beskriver hur Anatoles fall möter de kriterier den kliniska studien har. Ett hinder kvarstår. ONC201 är en klinisk studie som endast pågår i USA. Det svenska (europeiska) sjukvårdssystemet täcker endast behandlingar i Europa, även i fall som detta. Vi måste alltså klara oss själva, med privata medel. Vi har fått en plats för Anatole i Houston. Den första veckan med test och utvärderingar kostar bara den 58’000US$. Till det ska läggas kostnader för resa och boende, som vi uppskattar till 2’500US$ för Anatole och en förälder.
