Hey folks, I'm Doug Berry. I've been through a lot, cancer, and a stroke, and I've fought back to where I can work now as a Crossing Guard for a local school. I love my job, and it adds to my disability payments to help keep my wife and me afloat in hard times.
About two weeks ago I turned my left ankle. Because of peripheral neuropathy in my legs, I didn't realize how badly I had injured it, and kept working, averaging three miles a day (a distance I'm proud to make.) But the pain got to be too much, and I saw my doctor. Grade 3 Ankle Sprain, which means I've torn my anterior and posterior Talo-fibular ligaments. I'm going to be unable to work for at least 4 to 6 weeks. I'm lucky in that the Christmas break when I wouldn't be working anyway, is there, but I'm still going to lose a considerable chunk of pay.
On New Year's Eve, I suffered a fall. As of now, I have a fractured right elbow and some sort of non-bone injury in my hip. This happened while we were cleaning out our old storage unit. I have no idea how long I'll be out of work.
