Dear friends,
This summer marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of our beloved brother Audey Z’’L.
For those of you who never got to know him, I will try to describe my brother in a few words. Audey was one of the most genuine, gentle, courageous and generous people I have known. He was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 18 while studying in Yeshiva in Israel. During the following 2 years and a bit, he battled his disease relentlessly and survived far longer than his doctors thought he possibly could have. He passed away just after his 21st birthday, leaving us broken hearted but grateful for having known him. For anyone who hadn’t met him I probably sound like I am exaggerating, but he really was a unique, beautiful person. We, his family and friends, whom had the privilege of living with him and sharing his story, were inevitably touched and changed by Audey. He was endlessly caring, optimistic, full of faith, and was never bitter in the face of his personal adversity.
I often ask myself where he would be today if he were alive, and what he would be up to.
It’s heartbreaking to realize that while we all grow older, and build our own families, Audey remains a picture on the wall, a 20 year old memory.
Yet, despite the pain and the loss, Audey’s memory is one of courage and hope.
To mark the 20th Yahrzeit, I am hoping to write a Sefer Torah in Audey’s name: I feel that this would be a very appropriate tribute to our brother who exemplified what it means to be a Jew and how to live in the light of the Torah even in the hardest moments. This year is all the more significant as we will be celebrating our son Adin’s Bar-Mitzvah in Israel, and I feel that it would be very symbolic if he can read his Parasha from a Sefer Torah written in memory of the uncle whom he is named after. To this end, I have been collecting money from Britot that I have been performing over the last few years.
While I managed to collect half the sum needed, unfortunately we are still missing $20,000.
I am writing to you to ask that you participate in the mitzvah of writing this Sefer Torah in Audey’s memory (Le’Iluy Nishmato).
We have created a GoFundMe account where you can easily make your pledges and buy letters in the Sefer Torah.
Needless to say that we will keep you updated with the progress both in terms of funds and the actual writing of the Sefer, and you will all be cordially invited to the ceremony of the writing of the Torah as well as the Bar-Mitzvah, both of which should take place G-d willing in Jerusalem in the beginning of December, 2016.
I’d like to thank you on behalf of our whole family for your help in advance!
Yours Sincerely,
Yoni
