Topsail Island is a small quaint beach town that is visited by many people worldwide during the summer for its small town feel. The island has kept its foundation of small businesses and family owned motels to maintain its history and roots. Hurricane Florence slammed the island late last week and parked at its backdoor causing historic storm surge/flooding and continued to batter the island with Hurricane Force winds for over 36 hours causing severe damage to the infrastructure. It could have been a lot worse, but we are thankful for how well most homes and businesses stood up to this extended storm duration.
As a local on the island I have remained in contact with those that evacuated providing as many photo updates as possible to give them some piece of mind on the status of their homes. The major issue now is that many that evacuated inland (It was a mandatory evacuation) now cannot get back to their homes due to the inland flooding causing never before seen historic river levels that have closed most roads back to Topsail Island and other coastal areas until further notice. A lot of the community that left has run out of money and cannot continue to pay for their lodging away from home or have no money to refuel their cars or eat where they evacuated to. This fund will be used to help as many people as we can to stay safe, fed, and help them get home when safe passage becomes available.
This community is not built on chains and national retailers. Everything here is locally owned and operated. Many residents here rely on their hourly pay checks working at these local businesses to make a living (trust me....most live paycheck to paycheck).
Currently the island is still closed to residents as crews work to clear roads of debris, sand, and power lines. The local government of North Topsail Beach - NC, Surf City - NC, and Topsail Beach-NC, are working hard to hopefully allow residents back on the island Wednesday 09/19 to begin repairing homes and businesses on the long road to recovery here.
I'm a veteran of the Army and when disaster strikes I will give the shirt off my back to help others. Unfortunately I can only do so much financially to help others so we are asking for your help us get the people impacted by this disaster home safe and begin the recovery efforts needed to make Topsail Island, NC the place you love to visit again.
From the bottom of my heart I thank anyone and everyone that can help with this effort. I will post updates on how your hard earned money is being used to assist this devastated community. I can also be contacted via email at [email redacted] to help provide funds to those that need to use what we raise here. I will be personally accountable for how every dollar is used to provide relief efforts to this community. I can also be reached via cell at [phone redacted].
Thank you for your consideration of these efforts and ongoing recovery. We all have a long road ahead of us.
We will recover. We are #TopsailStrong!
