Tony Roiland’s Fund

Donation protected
After several months of symptoms and what he originally thought was a toothache, Tony has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, sarcomatous carcinoma.  This is a form of cancer which happens in about 1 out of 1000 tumors.   The tumor is located in his left sinus cavity and has grown into the soft tissue and portions of his cheek.

Surgery was successful; tumor was removed at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN on Monday and Tuesday, September 17-18. Wow! 10-12 hour surgery days.  A portion of the tumor was removed Monday with the balance removed Tuesday.  Also on Tuesday the surgeons reconstructed portions of the left side of his facial bone.  In-hospital recovery is expected to be 5-7 days followed by several weeks of recuperating at home.  6 weeks of radiation comes next.

Your support will help them with travel expenses, loss of income as well as help pay for medical bills not covered by our insurance.   Funds raised will alleviate stress and allow Heidi and Tony to focus on kicking this thing.

Thank you so much for show of support to Tony and Heidi!
So great!

Updates

Tony is basically self-sufficient, taking care of his daily needs and Heidi is back at work.  There is still significant swelling in his mouth and cheek but his speech is becoming more clear.  His left eye remains swollen shut so his vision for small things such as texting is still very limited.

Surgeons report everything is healing nicely; but it could be up to 3 months before the swelling completely subsides. With the continued swelling Tony has not been able to use his left eye. The doctor held it open and Tony was able to follow the doctor's movement with his eye.  His sight is good! His hearing in the left is greatly impaired to basically no sound. The doctors say this should also get better as swelling goes down.

Swallowing is also a challenge and his diet consists of pureed foods.

Tony was in the radiology simulation department to be fitted for his radiation mask.  This will be used to pinpoint where the proton radiation is to go and protect the areas not to be treated. He is concerned it will kill his last working brain cell ;-)
Radiation will begin October 29th. Treatments are planned for 5 days per week for 6 continuous weeks in Rochester.
Please pray for tenacity and  his spirit to be lifted. It's a long arduous journey.

Update 11/20:
Tony is on his 4th week of radiation out of 6. He is feeling much better several days after the feeding tube was placed. Feeding tube was necessary because of additional swelling in his face and mouth. So many things to deal with after the massive surgery to remove tumor and then reconstruct the left side of his face.

They are so thankful for the Hope Lodge in Rochester specifically for radiation patients. Many blessings amidst the struggles for which they are thankful.

Thank you again for your thoughts and prayers and support.
