Story of the JoAnn and Tony Smith family.

In August 2015, Tony fell off of a roof and broke his legs, ankles, arm and was in the hospital for a very long extended period. He still is not able to work and is in need of another surgery after many over the last couple years.

September 6th, 2015 while Tony was in one hospital in Sioux Falls, JoAnn's mother Debbie (JoAnn’s best friend) fell and hit her head which caused major damage to the brain and was in a coma. She was in the other hospital in Sioux Falls at the same time so JoAnn traveled back and forth. Their daughter Alyssa was in college Spearfish but quit college to be closer to take care of her grandma and father in the hospital. Their youngest son Aaron was going to school in Wolsey. Eventually Debbie was moved to a nursing home in DeSmet. She was not hardly able to speak and very seldom was able to communicate at all. JoAnn traveled back and forth for a very long time and lost many hours of work to do this while Tony was still not working and in the nursing home in Huron. He eventually got to go home.

In December of 2015 they lost Tony’s father from brain cancer.

In November of 2016, their oldest son Alex committed suicide while JoAnn was still caring for her mother and Tony. Tony’s ankles/feet will not heal correctly do to infection and numerous other things.

In April of 2017, Debbie passed away. Which was very hard on the family. She was their whole life and especially their youngest son Aaron. Aaron has been having a very hard time dealing with all the pain over last few years. He was treated at a treatment center for depression in Sioux Falls for a week, some months back. After struggling and trying to cope with everything, this past Saturday December 9th, 2017 their youngest son Aaron committed suicide also. Between the time of his grandma's passing and now Aaron also incurred medical bills and other bills which the family still are trying pay. JoAnn has missed countless hours of work and as we all know insurance doesn't pay everything.  They now have another funeral to attend as a family. The daughter Alyssa had begun school again in Watertown but she is home during finals week now and not sure how that is going to turn out. Tony is hoping to get his other surgery done in the next weeks.
