Tommy worked in a hotel in Bilene, Mozambique up until last year. He lost his job as the country went into lockdown and the hotel had to shut its doors.
He has been searching for other employment but with the tourist industry decimated, there are few jobs to be had. With a family of five to support, this has been a very challenging time for him.
For a while he has been telling me about his dream to start a chicken business, providing eggs to the community and nearby lodges.
He says demand is strong as the nearest town is 10km away, a distance many have to walk for food and provisions.
Tommy needs 50 hens to kickstart the business. He will also need some money to build the coop and buy some feed. He tells me each hen will cost $12 and will eat 125g of feed a day.
