Tommy’s Journey
Please help us support beautiful Tommy and his family through his fight and treatment against cancer. Tommy is a true hero and fighter and all of our support, love and hope will ensure that he is given the best opportunity to overcome this throughout ‘Tommy’s Journey’.
I am sure that for those of you that have the pleasure and privilege of knowing gorgeous, little Tommy and his beautiful family have been following and supporting his heroic journey over the past few months. From the day Tommy was born, on September 21st 2016, his beautiful, funny, and clever personality has made Becky and Todd smile endlessly and feel immensely proud. Tommy instantly charms everyone he meets with his infectious love and spirit which has meant that he is already loved and cherished by so many people at the young age of 22 months. Together, over the past two years, Becky, Todd and Tommy have built a lovely home, life and, most importantly, a beautiful family together with the excitement of a little sister for Tommy and another addition to their family all set for April 2018.
However, life as it was, was dramatically turned upside on Saturday 14th April 2018. Becky and Todd learnt the devastating news that their gorgeous, sweet little man had been diagnosed with a brain tumour known as medulloblastoma. This form of cancer is the most common malignant childhood brain tumour and they are commonly found in children between the ages of three and eight. Medulloblastomas usually develop in a part of the brain and, as they have learnt from Tommy’s diagnosis, can spread to other parts of the brain and spinal cord.
I cannot even begin to imagine how they would have felt hearing this heart breaking news and knowing that their little boy was about to begin one of the toughest and most emotional journeys of his and their lives. His diagnosis for both of them was extremely difficult and painful to digest, as you can imagine, but they have continued to be positive and help Tommy fight this throughout.
The doctors have said that although this type of cancer is highly invasive there is hope for courageous Tommy and his current treatment plan involves five cycles of chemotherapy and a further cycle of high dose chemotherapy to treat his tumours. However, due to the aggressiveness of this cancer Tommy, Becky and Todd, along with his beautiful baby sister Sofia, have been unable to go home since being admitted into hospital back in April. Tommy is currently having his third round of chemotherapy and he has already faced so many battles that are quite unimaginable for anyone let alone such a young and sweet boy. Throughout each treatment his strength, bravery and determination is credit to his wonderful parents, Becky and Todd, and their fight as a family is truly admiral.
Precious Tommy’s journey began on Saturday 14th of April when, following his diagnosis at Worthing Hospital, he was rushed to Southampton General Hospital in an ambulance to have urgent surgery, endoscopic third ventriculostomy, a procedure to treat a build up of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain.
On Monday 16th April Tommy then had further surgery on his brain. The neurosurgeons performed craniectomy and removed most of the tumour located in the bottom of the skull. Tommy spent time on the paediatric intensive care unit until he was stable. He then went on to the Neuro ward for further monitoring neurologically. On the 26th April Tommy was moved on the Piam Brown ward in preparation for his chemotherapy treatment. Brave Tommy started his first cycle of chemotherapy on Wednesday 2nd May. This was abandoned on the third day due to Tommy having a prolonged seizure. The specialists explained that Tommy’s seizure was due to a number of factors, with one of them being raised pressure in the brain. This meant another admission onto the intensive ward for poor Tommy and more surgery where Tommy had a VP shunt inserted. A VP shunt is a device that relieves pressure on the brain caused by cerebrospinal fluid accumulation.
Tommy’s second cycle of chemotherapy commenced on the 11th June. A few weeks later Tommy had a MRI scan and finally some positive news, the tumours are responding to the chemotherapy.
Presently, Becky and Todd are currently unsure as to what the future may hold for their little hero but they are determined to ensure that they approach each step of his journey with courage, strength and positivity. Whatever the future holds for Tommy, they want it to be the best it can be for their world, Tommy, Sofia and their family. I know that lots of you have been sending your love and hope to them all and would like to help and support them in any way possible at this difficult and testing time.
I have set up this page on behalf of Tommy’s fight and treatment against this cruel illness. Becky and Todd are currently looking into clinical trials and alternative medicines but are awaiting his results following his next round of chemotherapy to determine their next steps. Dependent on his results and if Tommy is still responding to his chemotherapy the money raised will be used to fund alternative treatments or for them all to have some special family times together when they get out of hospital.
