Hurricane Florence hit the Carolinas with a vengeance last week and so many have been affected. Our parents, Tom & Katie Howell, live in Wallace, NC, about 40 miles north of Wilmington. Thankfully, they evacuated to VA with their 2 dogs prior to the storm.

Due to road closures and flood waters still rising, they have not been able to get back to assess the full extent of the damage but they have gotten some pictures. The photo above was taken on 9/17/18 prior to the estimated cresting of the Cape Fear River on 9/19/18. They spent years in preparation for retirement dreaming, planning, designing, picking flooring/paint/cabinets, and finally, building their dream home. 

As Christians, we try to remember Colossians 3:2, "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth". But in this world, it's hard. We know that "things" can be replaced and we are especially blessed to have each other to lean on during this difficult time.

Once they are able to get home and start the long road back, we will definitely be there to assist. The house is not in a flood zone and no one could have predicted this "once-in-a-century" event, so, unfortunately, they did not have flood insurance. We really don't have any idea the cost of repairs yet but we wanted to be able to help. There will be clean-up first, then repairing the damage along with replacing furniture, clothing, food, etc.

Our family motto is "Make it a good day and do your best" and our parents are definitely trying. Some days/moments are better than others. We are all relying on Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me", which is what they taught us to do when times get tough.
