Tom was taken to University Hospital during the early morning of September 14 with stroke-like symptoms. Over the course of several days, it was revealed that Tom did not have stroke, but rather a suspected infection in his brain stem that doctors believe caused the issues with his motor skills such as talking, walking, etc.
During the first 48 hours, Tom's conditioned seemed to deterioate. Doctors discovered fluid on his lungs and he was placed into a medically induced coma. The doctors spent most of their efforts on clearing up his lungs so that Tom wouldn't develop pnuemonia. On Sunday, September 17, the Reno family received the first sign of good news when the doctors said that the lungs were clearing up.
While that was good news, the doctors still seem to be stumped as to what is causing the possible infection on the brain stem. On Monday, September 18, the doctors began bringing Tom out of his medically induced coma. As of Tuesday, September 19, Tom is out of a coma, but is still heavily sedated and in critical, but stable condition. On Tuesday evening, the doctors successfully peformed a spinal tap in the hopes of being able to gain any information as to what is causing Tom's illness. While we are still unsure as to the cause of Tom's illness, we do know one thing for sure, Tom is going to have a long road to recovery.
Most of you in the Deer Park Community know Tom and his wife Donna, as well as their children Vince, Rex, Savannah, and Loni. Tom is an employee of Deer Park Schools and works in the maintenance department. Tom's wife, Donna, owns Deer Park Barbers. Both Tom and Donna are extremely loving and giving people who love to help others, but now it's our turn to help them.
