On September 12, Tom Levy underwent surgery to remove a malignant brain tumor. While the surgeon believes most of the tumor was removed and Tom has responded well to post-surgery questions, we are awaiting the pathology results. Tom will likely need chemotherapy and radiation. He will need speech therapy and, during his recovery, he will be unable to work.
Tom is a Gainesville realtor and past board member of GACAR. He grew up in Gainesville, graduated from BHS in 1979, and has a 17-year old son, Julian, who he adores and supports. You might know Tom through his late mother, Judy Levy, a notable women’s rights and midwifery activist who in 1974 founded The Birth Center. You might have met Tom when he was a counselor at Camp Crystal Lake, as a parent at Jordan Glen School and Summer Camp, President of Theta Chi Fraternity (UF), Vice-President of Florida Blue Key, editor of The Alligator, or law student at Tulane University of New Orleans College of Law. Or, maybe you know him through one of the several nightclubs he owned in the 1990's including The Florida Theatre, Rev, Neatherworld, and Full Circle. An avid cyclist, fisherman, gardener, writer, and debater, Tom has the physical and mental strength to fully recover – he just needs support from his friends and community.
Tom has been my step-father for almost two decades and is the father of my youngest sibling. He, luckily has health insurance through my mother's job at Shands Hospital, but day to day expenses have a way of accumulating. Tom’s condition came on suddenly, without warning. His job as a realator requires a kind of energy and focus that becomes difficult in his condition and during his treatment. Without sufficient support from his friends, he will not be able to pay for his rent, utilities, phone bills, groceries and other costs of living. I have been asked to collect and organize donations to Tom's fundrasing campaign as sometims numbers and computers can be difficult for him. All funds collected in this online campaign will go directly to payTom’s living expenses as they arise. Thank you for any help you can provide.
