After hundreds of hours training. After tens of thousands of punches thrown and gallons of sweat poured into countless gut-wrenching workouts; Darrelle “Blast” Valsaint is now Haiti’s hope for the gold medal in boxing at the 2020ne Olympics in Tokyo. Though so much can be said about this prodigious pugilist, his life and the whirlwind of the past three years have solidified Valsaint’s Olympic journey to be one that legends are made of.

Growing up a first-generation Haitian born and raised in Orlando, FL, Darelle “Blast” Valsaint grew up an unruly youth in a single-family home with his Dear Mama, two brothers and one sister. First introduced to the boxing gym at age 12 after his behavior got him kicked out of every elementary and middle school he attended, Blast dropped out of high school at age 17 and devoted his life to his Olympic dreams.

Blast claimed the Gold medal in the 2019 Haitian National Games, the 2019 Creole Games, and the Gold at the 2019 world famous Sugar Bert Amateur Tournament in Florida. Just as Blast was beginning to mature as a fighter and his career was getting lit; out of nowhere, the Coronavirus pandemic shut-down the world and the 2020 Olympics were cancelled. Confused, depressed, angry, and bitter; Valsaint’s life took a turn for the worse when the lure of the streets reeled him into its trappings. After lengthy tribunals and a lot prayers, Valsaint evaded incarceration and plunged back into the gym with reckless abandon.

Through all the uncertainty of his life and with the lobbying efforts and support of the Natif Natal Foundation, the Federacion de Boxe Haitian, the Haitian Olympic Committee and his coaches Shihan Robert Rene and Daniel “Haitian Sensation” Edouard; It was announced on June 17th, 2021 that Haiti gained an additional wild card slot and Darrelle “Blast” Valsaint is now the 20-year-old ambassador for Generation Z (for Zoe) fighting in the Middleweight division in Tokyo.

The news was bittersweet as Haitian hopeful Kathreen Sterling (@kathreenmfs), who was going to be the FIRST EVER Female Olympic Boxer Representing Haiti, unknowingly was denied her previously assured wild card slot by the Olympics committee.

So now the time has arrived for Darrelle “Blast” Valsaint to carry the Haitian flag from the tiny island immersed in historical glory, beauty, and now chaotic fratricide into Olympic stadium to represent the hope of a nation.
