In the Democratic Republic of Congo, too many girls miss school simply because they have their period.

Period poverty is one of the most invisible, yet most damaging barriers to education, dignity, and the future of girls and women. When a family is living in extreme poverty, buying menstrual products becomes an unaffordable luxury. For many teenage girls, this means staying home several days each month. For many women, it also means increased vulnerability due to a lack of access to sustainable livelihoods.

Every month without a solution is another month where girls lose confidence, fall behind in school, and see their future opportunities shrink.

That is why the Faraja project was created.

Through this initiative, United Hope provides a concrete, human, and sustainable response to period poverty by addressing both urgent needs and root causes.

Our approach

Supporting girls to stay in school

We provide menstrual hygiene kits, age-appropriate menstrual health education, and safe spaces so girls can manage their periods with dignity, confidence, and peace of mind.

Creating economic opportunities for women

We train vulnerable women in sewing and the production of reusable menstrual products. This approach creates a local, sustainable, and accessible solution while equipping them with valuable skills, income-generating opportunities, and true independence.
