Our Story

The Leidl’s decided to take their Holiday photo on the beach this year. What a great idea! How festive!
We gathered up the children and our beloved pet-Toby and headed to Overlook Beach, Long Island. Toby is our beautiful Maltese Shitsu puppy-12 months old and a ball of white fur weighing all of 9 pounds.

When we arrived at the beach we started unloading our gear. We thought it would be a cool idea to have our picture on the beach-Christmas tree and all.  We,  our 12 year old twins, nine year old daughter and Toby, left the parking lot and made our way onto the sand. We started  our walk towards the ocean. I was following behind, Christmas Tree in tow, about 50 yards onto the beach I noticed a pit bull racing across the beach. I scream to my daughter to pick up Toby, but it was too late. The pit bull jumped and clamped his jaws onto our precious little Toby, viciously thrashing him around. I ran to the scene screaming to my wife to get the children away-fearing for their lives and having them to witness the horrific assualt on their innocent Toby. My children and wife were hysterically screaming in disbelief. There loving puppy being destroyed. The owner ran up and was unable to get her dog to release. Finally after about 6 minutes the dog released our Toby, bloodied and left in the sand for dead. I looked at his battered body in shock and noticed an ever so slight heart beat.  Ever so gently I scooped him up and made my way back to the car, at the same time screaming that you killed our Toby, you killed our Toby.

Once back at the car I placed him in his crate, while at the same time the pit bull owner was making her escape. We pursued her to no avail and made our way to the first animal hospital available. We rushed in screaming of our plight and they immediately started to work on him. Near death they started to see some signs of life. After 3 hours they had him stable enough for us to transfer him to the Vetinary Medical Center of Long Island-a full service 24 hour trauma center. The staff rushed to our aid and commenced working on him-vital signs dropping, his lifeless body in distress.

At midnight we met with the attending doctor and were told the grim news. They were unsure if he would survive the night and if he did the survival rate of the surgery was 50/50. To complicate matters we were told in order to move forward with any treatments they would need a payment up front. No fees, no treatment our beautiful Toby was assured to die. A donor has stepped forward to cover the initial fees and surgery.

At this time Toby has survived the surgery, although going into cardiac arrest and being resuscitated. The results of the surgery indicated that his liver was damaged, bleeding in the abdomen, several puncture wounds. Several blood transfusions later he is still struggling to survive and the facility is now pressuring us for additional funds to move forward.

We are therefore reaching out to the community to please help us in our time of dire need to save our poor little Toby.  For our sake, our children and Toby we need your help. A $5,$10, $20 ,$100 donation or more will bring us closer to our goal to Toby’s survival. Please spread the word.

Without your help our Toby will not survive. Thank you and god bless.
