Staged reading at ASA Conference

I am an independent scholar artist excited to bring my research to the Appalachian academic stage. Since 2010, I have collected data on the stories of survival among people of color (specifically women) in the region of Appalachia. Now I have an opportunity to bring it to the stage. I am announcing that next month, myself, along with local artists, will present a staged reading performance to share my work on black womens’ stories of survival at the Appalachian Studies Association Conference (ASAC). We need YOUR support to fund travel, equipment, costume and artists for our original performance. This campaign will directly support artist preparation, rehearsal, and participation in a staged reading of Affrilachian Memory: Tobacco Fields.

Precious Memories, a story of Black Womens' community survival  is a precursor to Tobacco Fields in the Affrilachian Memory Play Series. 


Tobacco Fields is a one-act play within the series that presents the voice of one Black Appalachian girl (affectionately known as Girl #9) growing up as an insider/outsider within the region. Situated in rural Kentucky, the play focuses on Girl #9’s coming of age. Girl #9 negotiates her Affrilachian identity through her own memory and imaginative stories of surviving work, abuse and family.
