To The Hidden Heros at ITU Burns Unit Swansea

Donation protected

On 12th august 2020, around 17.30, tragedy struck when my sister Aimee was injured in a fire at home.

Aimee was rushed to Southmead hospital by air ambulance where she was assessed and due to the severity of her burns, was then rushed to the burns specialists at Morriston ITU burns unit in Swansea.

We were later informed that Aimee had to be resuscitated while being rushed to hospital.

This is where we were told that Aimee had third degree burns to more than 50% of her body including all of her limbs. It was unknown if Aimee would be able to survive her injuries and that she would need to be put into an induced coma for her best chance of survival.

From here Aimee spent 5 weeks in a coma where medical staff from the intensive care unit on the tempest ward, worked tirelessly along with Aimees fighting sprit to keep Aimee alive.

Aimee was in a critical condition and underwent multiple surgeries to clear her wounds, skin grafts from her back and stomach (the only unaffected skin left on her body) and a tracheotomy.

During this period, Aimee also suffered other complications such as sepsis, chest infection and fluid on the lungs.

Once Aimee was strong enough, they slowly woke her from the coma. Although at this point she was still critically unwell and had a long road to recovery ahead of her.

The staff on the tempest ward continued to work around the clock to support Aimee with her every need, this included toileting, constant (and very painful) dressing changes, chest physio and eventually the start of her rehabilitation.

Aimees determination to survive and to recover have been inspirational to everyone that knows her.

As a huge thank you from Aimee and those who love her most, we would like to make a donation to the Tempest ward, specialist burns unit at Swansea hospital. We hope this will support them to continue their great work and to keep saving lives!

We are beyond grateful for the care that Aimee received. As due to covid restrictions not only did Aimee have to survive and process what had happened, she had to face it all alone.

The care given by the tempest ward along with Aimees incredible spirit and strength, are the reasons that Aimee is alive today.

I have decided that to raise money for this donation, I will be cutting my hair which I have grown since March 2020. There will be a choice of five hairstyles, you can vote for a hairstyle by making a donation. Whichever hair style receives the most donations, wins! The hair cut will take place August 12th to mark a year.

If you do not wish to vote on a hairstyle but would like to donate, any amount no matter how big or small, will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
