Turning waste things into great things - without costing the Earth.
As the Director of Re-imagine Resource Centre I want to play a part in addressing the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, racism, peace and justice.
In order to leave no one behind, it is important that we think beyond our own fields of activity. We live in an interconnected world and through collaborative action waste resources can be used to create a better lifestyle for everyone. Anyone who has visited knows Re-imagine is a place of creativity, giving and unity but we need your help to keep this journey going.
In these uncertain times our community needs us more than ever. We have continued to provide weekly doorstep deliveries of groceries and meals for vulnerable families and those shielding, we continued to provide amazing eco-creative resource packs and crafting boxes, including face mask kit packs, we continue to collect and redistribute toiletries and continue to be a place of support with weekly check-ins for our members. In 8 years we have supported ourselves without any funding, everything the store makes we put back into it, but with no customers, no events and no income it’s getting harder to continue the work we do.
It is important we are able to weather this storm as we know so many non-profits have had to close down. Your donation will go towards helping us keep our doors open and also will go towards our Holiday Hunger Project for both the Easter and Summer breaks for grocery deliveries and essentials craft packs to local families.
Every bit of work we do has creativity at its heart, including our food waste programmes, as we know food brings people together in so many ways. The Re-imagine Community Kitchen is where we share our philosophy about food and not only to give out food from the Solidarity Larder (which we have run for 3 years) where there is a need, but also running teaching workshops for folks to learn new cooking skills and develop planet positive relationships with food and their waste.
We have always realised that waste material is a valuable resource and re-use wins over recycling because it does not involve any reprocessing and industrial processing which produces pollution. There is actually a double saving for the environment when you use our materials because you not only save them from filling up a landfill site, but also they replace new, usually over packaged materials which you would have consumed otherwise. As well as the implications of working conditions of overseas factory workers of cheap craft supplies including young children. I am passionate about using and providing ethical art materials as every purchase you make is a moral choice.
Someone clever once said there are no passengers on Planet Earth we are all crew, well folks, have your boarding cards ready and stow your tray tables because the time is here and Mother Earth needs you. Our eco-credentials are fierce and our strategy remains the same, to actively seek out ways to reduce the waste in our community, to redirect waste materials to help people and educate folks onward to a beautiful, rewarding and fulfilling reuse journey.
