Love for the Andebrhan Crew

Hi friends,

Early in October, our dear friend Kara was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. That alone was incredibly shocking given her great health and young age. Not long after that, she learned that the type she has is called Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), which accounts for only about 15% of diagnoses. This specific type of BC is aggressive - it grows and spreads quickly. Thank God Kara found this lump (and one smaller lump) early on. It's about 1.7 cm in size which keeps it in the early stages and means she can start chemo as soon as possible. TNBC is a tough challenger and only responds to chemo.  As such, Kara will undergo treatments starting the last week of October. She'll receive chemo once a week every other week for the first two months (through end of December). Then she'll have chemo once a week for 12 weeks (until April). (You guys, this is aggressive, since the average treatment is only once every three weeks.)  She'll also be undergoing genetic testing which will inform whether or not she'll need a double mastectomy at the end of this. The testing will also help tell us what kind of risk the girls will have.

Let's talk about why we need to lift them up financially:

 - As if all this isn't enough, you may or may not know that Daniel sustained an injury this summer that required surgery.  After 3-4 months, he is only just now walking without a boot or crutches and driving on his own. And those medical bills haven't even rolled in yet.

- The amount of time Kara has had to take off to help Daniel through his surgery and recovery along with the onslaught of tests and appointments she's had to go through to arrive at her diagnosis and treatment plan has left her with ZERO paid time off left.  Her manager will be helping her solicit a PTO donation from her co-workers, but without knowing what that will result in and doubtful it will cover even half the time she'll need, her time to receive chemo treatments and recover from each one will require her to take time off unpaid. This is estimated to be a loss of 300-400$ per week.

- They will be switching their insurance coverage for 2019, but this will increase some costs.

- Until she goes through a surgery, she will receive no short term disability pay.

- Some of the prescription drugs TNBC requires may not be covered by insurance and are incredibly costly.

- Being that treatment is starting towards the end of the year, they will meet their out of pocket maximum this year, but that will reset right in the middle of her treatment on Jan. 1. Meaning, they'll need to meet another out of pocket maximum.

- Much of the genetic testing that will benefit Maya and Malia's future is not covered by insurance.

The bottom line:

If you've known Kara a month or her whole life, you know that she is focused, intelligent, determined, and nothing short of an over-achiever. She's competitive and doesn't back down from a challenge (it's also annoying because, let's face it, she usually wins). She's also sensitive, compassionate, kind, loyal, and a good friend.

It doesn't matter if you haven't spoken in years or see her every day, this is the once in a lifetime ask no one every wants to make. Please consider lifting this burden from Kara and her family in any way you are able. Even $10 here and there adds up significantly.

We have no doubt that this is only a bump in the road in Kara's beautiful life. With a team of local doctors and a network of family and friends near and far cheering her on, assisting, and lifting her up, she will add beating breast cancer to her list of accomplishments. There's nothing Kara can't do, but she's going to need every single one of us to make it happen.
