Tiny Theatre -Helping kids love reading

My name is Ian and I'm a junior at the University of Maryland, a member of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Honors College, and a member of the DoGood Institute at UMD.

There's no doubt that the ability to read is essential for academic success, yet about 65% of 4th graders do not meet national “proficiency” standards in reading. Research also shows that reading for pleasure has important social, emotional, and cognitive benefits.

However, if a kid has trouble reading he/she is probably not going to read for fun. Therefore, it’s important that kids both learn how to read and that they also enjoy reading, since enjoyment would naturally lead to reading for pleasure.

My venture tackles both of these needs. Tiny Theatre builds these foundational literacy skills and grows a love for reading through theatre activities that kids can do at home. Tiny Theatre is an engaging way for kids to practice reading and I hope to fully launch this business in Jan. 2022.

This is an impact-driven startup, that can be sustainable, profitable, and greatly impactful for kids. Your donation helps pay for costs related to growing this business.

The inspiration for this project started in 2019 when I volunteered with Black Child Development Institute in DC to give kids the opportunity to try out theater as an experience. During the volunteer workshops, I noticed that the theater activities were great for building students’ vocabulary, reading comprehension, and reading engagement. So, I changed the activities to focus on building reading skills through theatre.

Although I can’t continue in-person volunteer sessions, I have been donating 15% of my sales to The Literacy Lab DC to help support my mission of building students’ literacy skills. Thus, my desire is that the impact of Tiny Theatre extends beyond the household of those who purchased the scripts!

Thank you so much for reading this, donating, and sharing this!
