The Tiny Town Association is working to make tiny homes a legal housing option in Canada. Incorporated as an NFP Canadian Corporation in Sept. 2017, we believe that tiny homes on wheels (THOWs) are a sensible, affordable housing option for singles, couples and single parent families. They cost less to build, less to operate and are a more environmentally friendly form of housing.
Our Tiny Town project encompasses 3 forms of tiny home living:
· inFILL Housing: using the Garden Home model to provide zoning to allow THOWs to be an auxiliary dwelling on residential properties.
· Pocket Community: using the Cooperative housing model to allow 2-24 THOWs to live on a vacant city lot as a cooperative.
· Tiny Towns: using our off-grid sustainable neighborhood model to provide rental for a complete town of tiny homeowners. These towns are planned to be within easy commuting distance of a host city.
To develop awareness of tiny homes, we are planning a 49-city tour across Ontario visiting the cites we have identified that would make good host cities for Tiny Towns. We will contact the mayor, zoning, planning and building departments, college and university faculty, the media and public to attend open-house tours of our tiny home. We feel that the best way to introduce people to tiny living and impress upon them the sensibility of tiny homes as a housing option, is to get them into our model home, the Logan32 during our 4 days stay in each city.
· While there, we will provide our bylaw zoning framework that each city/municipality may use as a starting point to accommodate tiny homes.
· We have also prepared a project outline that we will present to the local college/university to develop a Tiny Town Pod. A Pod is the basic building block neighborhood module in a Tiny Town consisting of 12 tiny homes in a sustainable, community design. Working with each city, we want to encourage institutions to build a Pod, that will allow them to test our Pod design in real-world scenarios. This will provide an opportunity to collect data on tiny home living, tiny home operating requirements and the social effect of Tiny Town community living. This information can be correlated amongst all participating institutions, in all cities.
To date, we are successfully building the Logan32 using products sponsored by a growing array of businesses. The tour will take approximately 10 months to visit all cities, involving 4-day stays, then setup/tear-down and travel between cities. We are reaching out to you to help fund the tour through a donation and by encouraging your friends, relatives, and acquaintances to support us as well. To influence this change in our society, beginning in Ontario and then across Canada, will require a lot of support from everyone. We don’t expect to require ongoing private funding, because once our project becomes visible and we have had an opportunity to meet with various decision makers, we expect to be able to get corporate/government funding to carry the message and project forward.

If you haven’t bought your first home, or if you are a downsizing empty-nester, tiny homes make sense. If you are worried about saving up enough to buy your first home, tiny homes make sense. If you want to break out of the rent cycle, tiny homes make sense. As a social initiative to help the homeless, tiny homes make sense. Tiny homes make sense on many levels and we have a series of plans to enable tiny homes across the country. If you live in Kingston and want to move to Kitchener with your tiny home, you need somewhere to park when you get there. This is what we are working to develop, a network of Tiny Towns that allow you to check availability in the city you want to move to, book a new site online, and pack up your tiny home and move there.
