Timica Volunteering on Mercy Ships

Donation protected
Hi All!

I'm about to embark on something special and I'm asking for your donation..

Over 5 billion people on Earth lack access to safe surgical and medical care. In many developing countries people are plagued by preventable disease, untreated illness and neglected injuries.

What is it?

Mercy Ships is a global charity which has operated a fleet of hospital ships in developing nations since 1978.

Hospital ships transform lives. They deliver state-of-the-art hospitals to regions where clean water, electricity, medical facilities and skilled personnel is limited to nonexistent. When Mercy Ships arrives in port, screenings are organised throughout the country to identify patients most in need. Patients are then transported to the ship where they undergo life-changing, and in some cases life-saving medical care.

Basic surgical care can range from Orthopaedic  (fractures, club feet, congenital conditions), Plastic reconstructive (benign tumors, chronic ulcers, burn contractures), Maxillofacial (craniofacial tumors, cleft lift/ palate, ear-nose-throat diseases), Women's health (childbirth complications, prolapse), General surgeries (hernias, goiters), Eye Care (cataracts), Oral health (tooth extraction, tooth decay) and Palliative care (terminal illnesses).

Currently the Africa Mercy is the only Mercy Ship in service, but it represents greater capacity than all prior hospital ships combined. Converted from a Danish rail ferry into the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship, the Africa Mercy has 5 operating theatres and an 80-bed hospital ward including recovery / intensive care and low dependency wards.

I will be working aboard the Africa Mercy from 7th Jan - 31st March 2018. During this time Africa Mercy will be docked at Douala, Cameroon in West Africa.

What will I be doing?
While on board I will be serving as a Physical Therapist. I'll be responsible for providing high quality rehabilitation services for pre and post-operative surgical patients. I'll be working with a team of Physical Therapists aiming to:

- correct pathology
- restore, reinforce and enhance performance following surgery
- facilitate the learning of skills and functions essential for adaptation and productivity
- promote and maintain health

Why am I raising funds?
Every Mercy Ships volunteer pays their own way so that every dollar donated to the organization can go to direct patient care, training programs and other costs associated with its field service initiatives.  From doctors to nurses, engineers to deck hands, housekeepers and teachers, everyone serves as a volunteer, no wages or payment for services are received.

Since Mercy Ships requires that I raise 100% of my support, I am asking for donations to help pay for my transportation to and from the ship (air fares), crew fees (room & board), travel and health insurance, immunisations and personal expenses.

I'm asking my family and friends to partner with me to help finance my stay and impact more lives.

Mercy Ships estimates that my monthly expenses will be $1,200, which covers room, board and basic health insurance. Together with one-time costs such as air fares, immunisations and insurance, the total estimated cost is $8,400.  While I'm putting my personal savings towards this goal, I would be overwhelmed and so grateful to raise at least half ($4,200) from your donations.

Yes, donations are tax-deductible!

Additional Information.
Healing continues long after the ship departs Douala in Cameroon, West Africa. Mercy Ships seeks to leave the host nation better equipped with the training, tools and infrastructure to care for their own including the following:

- providing medical tools & resources
- building improved medical facilities
- offering specialised training to local health care professionals in techniques and procedures appropriate for their environments
- educating families on practical food-producing skills and conservation-oriented farming methods that reduce malnutrition, increase food security and result in more income and better health
