THREE HOMES FOR YOUR KID TONIGHT

1) The Mayim Institute in Pocomoke City, MD

The Mayim Institute in Pocomoke City, Maryland, headed by Rabbi Shimon Grady, is an alternative Orthodox community with its own shul. Rabbi Grady has been sponsoring Shabbatons and hundreds have participated at Mayim's festival programs. (As I am writing this, Rabbi Grady is driving six hours to pick up a homeless older Chassid in the Appalachian mountains of Pennsylvania).

The Mayim Institute runs several programs, sponsored by a few donors, including Rabbi Grady. More homes are needed, more programs are called for. A suicide hotline with therapists speaking Yiddish and Hebrew is planned.

2) The Teyvah Farm in Woodbourne, NY

The Teyvah Farm in Woodbourne NY is a working farm with goats, ducks, a horse, and a donkey.

Teyvah grows its own organic vegetables, in the permaculture tradition. Mark Altman's edenic setting of animals, plants and flora --imagine a breakfast of a duck-egg omelet with just-cut greens, hundreds of blueberry trees, raspberries, elderberries and wild strawberries; 100 acres of forest--is quite a respite for a mentally disabled homeless man, or a young woman who suffered from domestic violence and is looking for a place to recover.

The Teyvah is highly selective in its application process; only certain people can assimilate into a farm way of living.

3) The Sober House in Wesley HIlls, NY

Samey Perl and Heshi Schnitzler have established a home for runaways, or those who left the Ultra Orthodox community but have nowhere to go, no place to call home; a space to heal, a resting stop for those on the road. The warm and sober environment facilitates life coaching, job placement and the pursuit of higher education.

A young man rings the bell at 11pm on a cold winter night, "Hello, is this the Sober House? I don't have where to sleep tonight." You can hear in his voice the tears that are not coming.

Please give what you can and share. Thank you.
