Tonias Lymes Disease Treatments
Tonia was at work one day and started not feeling well. Within a few short hours we had to call an ambulance. From that point on Tonia spent the next few weeks in and out of the hospital and seeing specialists trying to figure out what was going on. Symptoms ranging from aching joints and muscles, weakness and numbness in her arms and legs, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, sensitivity to light and sounds, extreme fatigue...... our bubbly, tenacious Tonia was suffering with no end in sight. Not one to back down from a fight, she took this all in stride and continued to push for a solution.
Struggling to get a diagnoses, a doctor finally gave some hope. Lymes Disease. Finally an answer and a start to some treatments to work toward recovering.
OT and PT to help build her strength, IV therapy to fight the infection raging through her body, as well as a new diet taking out things like red meat, dairy and gluten while adding in herb and vitamin supplements. All these changes and treatments have come to be very costly and unfortunately are not covered by insurance. This on top of being out of work for weeks especially after just reopening her small business that was closed for months due to the pandemic, all right before the holidays. Not being able to work caring for her clients, but most importantly not being able to care for her 2 and 4 year old girls, this has been an incredibly difficult time for Tonia. Any support to help her continue her treatments and help her bounce back to the amazing, larger than life woman we all adore is very much appreciated.
Lyme disease is caused by infection with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Although most cases of Lyme disease can be cured with a 2- to 4-week course of oral antibiotics.
Neurologic symptoms of Lyme disease occur when the Lyme disease bacteria affect the peripheral or central nervous systems.
Cranial nerve involvement: When the cranial nerves are affected, facial palsy (droop) can occur on one or both sides of the face.
Peripheral nerve involvement:When the peripheral nerves are affected, patients can develop radiculoneuropathy which can cause numbness, tingling, “shooting” pain, or weakness in the arms or legs.
Central nerve involvement: When the central nervous system is affected, Lyme meningitis can cause fever, headache, sensitivity to light, and stiff neck.
Patients can sometimes have symptoms of pain, fatigue, or difficulty thinking that lasts for more than 6 months after they finish treatment. This condition is called Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS). Why some patients experience PTLDS is not known. Some experts believe that Borrelia burgdorferi can trigger an “auto-immune” response causing symptoms that last well after the infection itself is gone. There is no know treatment for PTLDS.
