Liver Failure: Rally for Robert Beauregard
People know Rob from his friendly smile, crazy laugh, and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it. He's one of those people who can be counted on while never expecting anything in return. Today, though, Rob and his family need a helping hand from friends and family, as he finds himself alone and awaiting further medical tests and evaluations in Boston, at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Several days ago, Rob began feeling unwell. He reached a point where he couldn't consume food or water, felt exhausted, and couldn't walk because he couldn't breath. On November 27th, his amazing wife, Carrie, was able to convince him to go be seen. So with his last bit of strength, he got himself to the car and was dropped off at the ER at Northwestern Medical Center (COVID restrictions prevented Carrie from staying with him).
While inside, Rob presented with jaundice, nausea, difficulty breathing, brown urine, fatigue, and so on. The wonderful staff at Northwestern performed a battery of blood work and testing to find the issue. During that time, he was told by medical staff that they were leaning towards a diagnosis, but had to await the results. A couple of hours later, things turned more dire.
Rob was diagnosed with Acute Liver Failure at NWMC, after several hours. Fearing the severity of his illness and the lack of capabilities at their medical facilities, it was decided to send Rob from the hospital in Saint Albans, VT to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. The worry was that his liver failure would require constant monitoring, and he would require a transplant, so Mass General's Liver Center would be the wisest choice to save his liver and his life.
As of today, Rob has been at Mass General for a couple days, receiving great care and plenty of tests. He has had the strength to speak with his wife and son at times, and that makes us hopeful.
A bit ago, doctors were able to finally diagnose what caused his liver failure: Hepatitis A. However, even with the cause of liver failure, his prognosis isn't fully known. His doctor has said that, while his numbers are slowly improving, he may still likely need a transplant. They've also said that no time table is available for improvement or when he'd even reach the point of leaving Mass General. So while there's a diagnosis, there's still as much unknown as ever.
Rob was working full time as a manager at Goodwill. He has no sick or vacation time accrued to help during this time of uncertainty. His wife, Carrie, will now travel 5 hours away and miss work to be there for her husband. They have a son, a mortgage, car payments, and pets. They have the typical life expenses that most people have, except now they will only have one income to pay for everything. Please help them so they don't have to worry about losing a car, house, etc. The medical bills will be monstrous as it is, but one shouldn't have to worry about becoming sick and losing a home, too.
I understand the difficulty during this time of year, with money and the holidays. The pandemic is also looming over everyone, breathing uncertainty into our lives during a time when things should be joyful and happy.
