Imagine being out and about with your family this past holiday weekend when you receive a phone call from a friend advising you that your house was on fire and the fire department was there. As you drop everything to get home everything is running through your head, "My house was fine when we left, please God let it be ok, please protect our dog, everything we own that means something to us in our home! Our belongings! Our children's belongings! This has to be a mistake or something minor, etc."
However, that nightmare became a reality for Erik, Amelia, and their two young children. On Sunday, September 3, 2017 as they arrived they quickly realized this was not a small minor accident. El Centro Fire and Imperial County Fire responded, 10 firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, but unfortunately the Thompson's realized it was too late and there was nothing they could do about everything inside. Their home is severely damaged. The fire originated in the kitchen which is now completely destroyed. The Living room area is also destroyed due to water and smoke damage, and the rest of their home and everything in it was hit hard with smoke damage.
Their beloved family dog became trapped in the fire, was
rescued and given oxygen and has been recovering well and is expected to make a full recovery.
Erik and Amelia would never ask for anyone's help, but as Amelia's cousin I wanted to set up this account for those of us who wish to assist them during this very difficult time. They are the type of people who are always willing to help others.
Both Erik and Amelia work hard in the communities of the Imperial Valley. She recently began her 12th year of teaching elementary students and is a devoted teacher who has inspired many students. About 2 years ago Erik left his job of many years at Thompson Machinery and made his goal & long time dream of becoming a local Deputy Sheriff a reality. He is committed to protecting and serving the communities of Imperial County.
Erik and Amelia do have insurance, however, because the fire happened so recently they are in the beginning stages of the claim process and it is unknown how long it will take until they can make extensive repairs to fully restore their home that they have resided in for the past 14 years. Unfortunately, at this time they can not and will not be able to occupy the home for an extended amount of time. Insurance will not recover everything that they have lost.
NOTHING can be removed and used from their home due to the smoke damage. They are hoping that they will be able to recover some things, but it will be a minimal amount of items. Erik and Amelia have had to purchase and will continue to replace the basics to get by for right now. This includes all the basic toiletries from a hair brush to toothbrushes. They have got to replace their clothing such as under garments, pajamas, business attire for Amelia, shoes, socks, and all clothing items for the children. They were unable to remove any of the children's items. As you can imagine, the basics to be able to function daily are costly and quickly adding up.
