We’re delighted to launch our “Malin to Mizen” club run/walk next bank holiday weekend. We’re aiming to run 500km over the space of the 3 day weekend. we’re delighted to help another GAA family and South Dublin GAA club in need of some help. All proceeds will go to Support4Drummo, Sean Drummond is a former Cuala GAA senior footballer who was involved in a serious road accident last year. We’ll be encouraging all members to take part and donate if your in a position to do so. 5km donate €5, 10km donate €10. On the 23rd of March 2019, Sean’s world changed dramatically when he was knocked down in a terrible accident in London. Sean suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) with multiple skull and facial fractures. It is a miracle and a testament to the Specialised Air Ambulance team that Sean made it to the Royal London Hospital alive.
He was brought straight to theatre for life saving surgery to stop the bleeding and to relieve pressure on his brain in order to save his life. Within his first 72 hours in hospital, Sean was on life support in the Acute Care Unit and had to undergo two more emergency operations to remove large sections of his skull to reduce the pressure due to swelling on his brain. For the next 2 months, Sean lay in bed in a coma, fighting infections, whereby every day there were new challenges. In May, he finally underwent extremely complex surgery to insert artificial plates in his skull. It was the first time that surgeons have replaced this much skull in a patient.
Sean never stopped fighting for his life, overcoming obstacles and continuing to prove his strength by recovering from his countless surgeries. Finally in June, his tracheostomy was removed, meaning he was able to breathe without the help of a machine.
On the 10th of July, Sean was physically stable enough to be transferred to the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability in Putney (south west London), where he is participating in a programme of intensive rehabilitation. Putney specialises in treating people with prolonged disorders of consciousness. We have been told by the medical professionals that recovery levels are hard to predict, as everyone’s brain injuries are unique. Sean is yet to regain full consciousness so as of early September, we are still in unknown territory as to what the future holds for Sean. However, there is a lot that we do know about him - Sean is determined and courageous, persistent and tough - and has youth on his side.
The rehabilitation journey that Sean is embarking on is long and hard. We do not yet know the level of funding required to ensure Sean has the best chances to one day return to the life he imagined for himself. He will require specialist equipment, intensive rehab courses and all the care and support that he can get for a long time - and maybe forever.
Our initial step to fund this journey is to open a GoFundMe page for donations. Please donate if you can - and also share this link with people who may be able to support the funding effort.
