This is for my friend and former student, Jane. Six years ago, I was Jane’s clinical instructor. Last week out of the blue, Jane reached out to me from a shelter; she had just left a violently abusive relationship and needed help. Last night, after a few days of arranging a safety plan, she boarded an airplane with one bag of luggage and the clothes on her back. She is flying overseas to stay with me for a few months; to get a job, get a place, and get stronger. I don’t remember her face, but I know her story by heart.

I cannot share specifics or personal photos of Jane, however, I can share the text she wrote me before she left:

“I need your help. I don’t know what to do about any of this. I am so anxious. I have nightmares every night and am barely sleeping, I have so much fear. I don’t have anyone helping me and I’m so scared.”

Jane does not know about this GoFundMe fundraiser because I don’t want to get her hopes up. Sadly, I realize that many who read this have lived through similar trauma. I also know domestic abuse is not limited to women. I believe in “paying it forward,” and any donation from your heart would be greatly appreciated, dear reader. But if you are on a budget, please feel free to share a kind thought. You will never meet Jane; that’s not even her real name. But we all know a Jane … and with your kind heart, we can make her smile.
