Shrink the Bills, Shrink the Mass!

When Andie, a 32 year old, mother to 3, suffered a seizure on Saturday, August 10, 2013, our family hoped that the worst was behind us. We were wrong. After 10 days in the hospital, with no end to her hospital stay in sight, it has become clear that even if she were released tomorrow (which she won't be), the medical bills and other expenses related to her stay in the hospital will last for some time to come.

Andie suffered a significant (thankfully, not a grand mal) seizure while leaving the mall with her husband and her 2 and 6 year old sons"”her daughter was not with her at the time. In the time since, she has had 4 MRI's, 2 spinal taps, an EEG and CAT scan, and (not quite literally) gallons of blood drawn.

The doctors were initially testing for infectious disease (eg: West Nile) OR cancer. The results of the tests she has had so far have led them to believe they are no longer considering infectious disease. Without conclusive results (who knew that spinal taps are only 30% accurate?!) they cannot yet diagnose her with brain cancer"”but all signs point that way and the doctors have really been preparing us for that since about 5 days after she was admitted.

The hospital where she is has been providing good care, but not great. They are not a neurology hospital, nor a cancer hospital"”either of which would be much more helpful for her current needs. We remain hopeful that a biopsy will be ordered, as it would likely provide the most accurate information about the 1 inch mass in her brain.

The folks at Eisenhower are working on getting Andie transferred to a facility better suited to treat her medical needs. There has been talk about Cedars Sinai, Loma Linda, Moreno Valley, UCLA, and possibly even City of Hope.

Andie is a strong, courageous fighter with a positive attitude and great sense of humor. She will conquer whatever is in store for her to come back to her loving and supportive husband (who has not left her side since she was admitted) and her 3 smart and beautiful children (who visit her every day). She misses everyone dearly, and is so grateful for the support she has received from so many wonderful and kind people.

The funds received through this link will be used to assist Andie and her family pay expenses not covered by Medi-Cal.
